I have an HK4 in .380, ser # 18xxx. It has a 71 on the left side of the forward portion of the trigger guard. I cannot find any import markings on it. The only marking on it is .....

OBERNDORF N / MADE IN GERMANY

..... On the left side of the forward portion of the slide; and "Mod HK4" on the left rear of the slide, aft of the safety lever. I will try to post a pic, but the last time I tried it it didn't work too well. Anyway my question: is it unusual for this gun not to have an import marking? Or am I just not looking in the correct place? From a historical perspective, when were these imported into the United States, and what were the typical import markings on these guns back then?

Have you disassembled the gun to look for marks? It may have been brought back by a service member in a shipping container, hence no import marks. But, there is a proof mark under there somewhere.
