Well, it's been torture looking at y'all's pics and reading opinions (both positive and negative) about your HK45s... I had to wait 10 days, by the time I found one, sent the money and FFL, waited for it to ship back and then wait the three days... TORTURE, I tell you!!!

Some things I noticed:

Finish wearing off the slide stop lever - Mine came perfectly finished, and within one day, I had rubbed the finish off the corners, just by fingering her (have not shot it yet). I really don't care, as long as it doesn't rust.

ErgoGrip - Is just as I remembered it when I got to finger a prototype at the NRA Annual Meeting in St. Louis last April. This thing fits my hand like it was made for it, and the "grippiness" gives extreme confidence of a combat grip one-handed, wet, etc.

The one thing I DID find that I think is a weakness in this design (and I haven't seen it mentioned here before), is that the lanyard loop attachment point is on the removable backstrap, which means it is held on by one roll pin.

I know, I know, this is an EXTREMELY MINOR point. I concur. BUT, I do plan to secure this weapon to me with a lanyard while on-duty. Hopefully, I won't have to worry about dropping it, or someone else trying to take it away, but if I do, that roll pin will be an added worry... Chances of it being a real problem: probably around 1 in 25,000,000. I'd be better off worrying about how to spend my lottery winnings... :)

A lanyard is mainly used for weapon retention in a military/combat scenario. If you have a good holster to begin with than you have defeted the 99% of the chance that the lanyard would be needed. For the other one percent...if the bullets did not stop the bad guy I would not worry about the lanyard being the item keeping the pistol in your possesion!
Just some good fun.
:D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Seriously enjoy your new HK!!!

The only time I've used a lanyard has been with my Army issued M9. I've found no need for one in police work, not on patrol and not for tactical duties. YMMV.

If I were to use one with the HK45, I wouldn't worry about the roll pin.

A Blackhawk SERPA lock or Safariland holster has added weapon retention built into it. This can help prevent take-aways because the pistol will not release unless you disengage the lock.

SERPA lock grips the trigger guard and you must press on a spring loaded latch with your index finger to release the pistol. My experience with these holsters has proved they are very well made and natural to do when indexing upon drawing. Also, furthur retention after the lock is disengaged is also adjustable via a screw.

The Safariland forces you to push down on a "hood" over the top of the handgun while simultaneously pushing it forward out of the way to release the pistol. Pulling up without releasing this lock will result in increased retention making it virtually immpossible for someone to pull the gun free.

Now if they made these for the P30 and HK45 you would be all set. I'm convinced they will be coming out in the near future.

I just thought of something- if you're counting on the lanyard to prevent a weapon disarm, you should be aware that while it may keep the gun tied to you it won't someone gaining control over it and shooting you with it.

Honestly, I only use the lanyard with the POS M9 so I don't lose it. Weapon retention is another matter entirely.

Points well taken, and correct points all, including P7M8's! :D :D

In addition to all that was said above, I'd add that a strong advantage for a lanyard is for K-9 officers. When holding a lead with an insane mali-nut at the end, and your handgun in the other hand, it's good to have a lanyard, just in case...

I'm eagerly awaiting the Serpa. I left Safariland awhile ago, and I don't want to go back. (I've become very anti-leather, even the synthetic leathers in my old age - They're just too heavy. :D ) I'm expecting to use a paddle SERPA for off-duty and a SERPA duty holster for on-duty. I just wish they'd get the dang things on the market. (I know the P30 one will fit, but I'm patient. I'll wait for the one that is acknowledged/tested to work with the HK45, just like I'll wait for the LEM kit that HK specifically says is for the HK45.)

"Anti leather" you say? I won't carry my gun in anything but leather. I have tried molded holsters of many different types (including SERPA) but leather is still king in my world. I use DeSantes Speed Scabards for mostly all my guns. No added retention, but when carrying concealed thats not a big worry. I like leather because it naturaly flexs with your body making it more comfortable. The molded holsters are too rigid for me to wear concealed for extended periods.

Not to mention the absolute crappiness of hosters like the Fobus. :D

Well, I should have been more specific... Nowadays, I carry on a duty belt or in a paddle holster... If I was wearing an IWB, shoulder holster, or other maximum concealment, then, yes, leather is better. BUT, in those situations I usually don't have 15 lbs of other gear hanging on my belt either... So, I guess it's overall weight. If I gotta wear the duty belt, it's plastic and nylon. If I can wear just a gun, cuffs, light, and badge, I can and often do wear leather.

I imagine for that application (duty belt) a molded holster would be better then leather. I could see where the flexability would actually be a detrement on a heavy gear-filled belt and when not worn close to the body. Thanks for clarifying.

The SERPA seems like the best solution, they should make one soon.
