For years in the 80s I remember how the HK system with the rollers and all was supposed to be the "best" system for unlocking the action etc. I really liked it anyways.

'Course at the same time other nations uniformly used a gas system of some sort to open the actions of their rifles.

Now HK is making gas operated rifles, and even the P7 has a gas system of sorts.

Why the change over?

The Western world's militaries are too invested in the AR platform to change. That and nobody was buying long, heavy, steel battle rifles anymore. HK needs to move iron and it's better to have something that's saleable than something that's "better"
