How much difference does an extended mag release make?

18924 Views 49 Replies 31 Participants Last post by  gtmtnbiker98
I love my H&K USP Compact 45 but I have one problem with it. My mag changes are too slow. No matter how hard I train to get fast at it I just am not happy with my speed . I am not sure if my thumb is to short or what it is. I tried using my trigger finger and I am still not fast enough. I was thinking of trading it for a Glock 30 but thought I may try an extended mag release first. So how much difference does the extended mag release make? Does it make it so you don't have to shift your hand as much? Thanks in advance.

Well here is my mileage and suggestion:

First: I installed a HK45c mag release on my USP45 and it changed my life. It was working just fine before, but now, it is so fast and easy. I love it, I wish they did that on all of their pistols and I would do it to every USP that has a metal mag.

Second: HK mag releases are used much more efficiently if you use your middle or trigger finger. I use my middle finger and it is very fast. Once you get used to it, much faster than any side button release.

Here are a few for example.
Fast P30 reload.

Maverick's thoughts on it, pretty important:

It (HK45C mag release) makes a huge difference, put one in a USP Compact 9mm, alot more purchase on it, would not think such a small thing can make suge an impact on mag change speeds ... its well worth the money! I use my thumb and index finger together since my hands are big and fingers are long, and I dont have to change my grip on the USP while doing it
I put the extended mag release on my USP-SD. I don't know if that is the same as the HK45, but the stock one was just too small. I swapped out for the bigger one that matches the one on my Mark 23. It was much easier. Like Navyman said, using your middle finger is much easier. I can do mag changes much faster than my Glocks. With the jetfunnel installed it's lightning fast and the weights on the bottom of those mags help them slide out faster.

Ditto.
1) Extended mag release

2) Draw the spare mag before you release the dry or near dry mag in the gun. I can change a mag in most pistols in 1 second

3) Practice dry, (no live ammo) at home

It helps to be a reloader or have a reloader make you dummy ammo with no powder and fired primers for the weight factor
I pratice and train as much as posible , but I just am not as fast as I want to be. I will try an extended mag release and see how it helps my speed.
With the standard mag release on my P2000, I used to use two fingers to hit the mag release. The little nub doesn't provide great leverage, to say the least....

With the HK45c mag release on my P2000, I just use my trigger finger. Much easier, probably the best upgrade you could make.
do you use your trigger finger and practice a lot.
Major!
Make's a Major Difference. The Glock 30 has some issue's the SF model has many with a trigger bar issue. Elijah a member here just got his first HK a USPc .45 from what i know he's very happy. And he plan's a extended mag release. His G30 i think he said is at Glock trying to figure out the problem's with it. The G36 and G30 i think are two Glock's that are hit and miss. That's a huge trade off. If i had a G30 i would trade you in a moment, good luck.

BTW, i have one on my USPc 9mm and one at the moment without. Comparing the two side by side i see just how big a difference the ext. mag release is..
So where can I source this extended mag release? I have a USP-C that I would like to upgrade and the only place I know to look is oh of them (HKparts)

Here are some comparison pics if it helps. This is a full size USP9.

To get one you really just have to wait until HKparts has them in stock. I don't know any other place that carries them. Sorry.

You can order directly from HK but you've just missed it because they just sold out the last batch a couple of days ago.
what exact part number or model is the extended mag release from.Gotta order a couple of those.
HK45 Compact. Part no: 234270.
Night and day. For the money it's the best modification you can make on a USP or p2000.
I am certain that the HK 45c magazine release is a nice modification and needed by some. Honestly, on my new P2000 I have no trouble what so ever finding and activating the standard mag release with trigger finger, middle finger, or my thumb. So I am staying stock. Bill
The first thing I did when I got my P2000SK LEM is to swap out the mag release with the extended one (thanks Brownie!). Then proceeded with the V2 LEM --> V1 LEM conversion. It makes a world of difference, especially on a small, sub-compact.
