I've own my Mk23 for a few years now and something odd is happening to the finish of the bbl. I have attached a picture, and I'm wondering if this is something anyone has seen before.

Ugly I know, but it's normal for a newer production Mark 23. If you've had that gun for several years and the painted finish is just now flaking off you aren't shooting it enough lol.

Thank you...you're correct It doesn't get shot enough. I used to have a USP45T and I had a few thousand rounds of 45 loaded for it...they wouldn't cycle the Mark....had to start over.

That's probably a couple hundred rounds worth of wear. You should see my barrel. It's nasty. But chix dig body damage and rash so we cool.

mine,a BD date code, had that on the chamber hood, ( a sizable portion too) from after the 1st mag through it. From what i've read on here its common, and i believe the metal goes through a treatment process that should still keep it protected from corrosion and whatnot even after the black 'top coat' flakes off.

Yep the black finish is not the corrosion protection. It is cosmetic. When these guns were designed they were for pure military purposes so cosmetics were not a concern. There were to be some released to the public, but very limited. All these years later, we see that a full production release to the public occurred so cosmetics became a concern. Civilians like pristine guns. Personally I don't care too much about honest wear. Anyway, the corrosion protection is on the molecular level. Even without the black finish, the Mark 23 endured 60 hours of exposure to salt spray with no corrosion. Sooooooo there ya go.
