I'd pass on this one. The 16" barreled MKE rifles have to use the proprietary 10 round magazine (good luck trying to find extra mags!) and have the funky trigger pack that is welded to the stock. Lame!

Look for an MKE AT-94P (pistol) with the 16" barrel. Replace some parts to be 922r compliant then attach a stock. File the Form 1 then cut the barrel. The pistol is the way to go -- the rifle is just too neutered.

Welcome to the forum. The MP5 is a foreign design. So the only place for a US made parts set would be Special Weapons, Tactical Weapons, Black Market Parts (Todd Bailey). HK Parts sells lots of Rim Country Manufacturing quality made US parts but not a complete US made parts set, at least that I'm aware of. Certainly they do have enough US made parts to avoid 922(R) compliance problems when building from a foreign made parts set.

Since the MKE is foreign built, it doesn't have US parts in it. As posted above, the MKE carbine must be heavily modified to pass the "Sporting Use" test so it can be imported as a rifle. The magwell modifications/10 rd mag is part of what the modifications required for the carbine to be in "Sporting Use" configuration. The 16" pistol version can have enough US made parts to make it 922(R) compliant as a Title I rifle. Use the search function and you'll find many threads on the subject. Good luck with your clone purchase project.

you guys are genius. now how much would the Form 1 cost to make it an sbr? Will I be able to use it for sport (range, outdoors target practice) with a short barrel? Remember I live in Florida. Instead of cutting the barrel should i just buy one with a threaded end? That top mp5 in your avatar is something I'm going for. I really appreciate the help. Besides AtlanticFirearms, where else can I get the MKE AT 94P?

In order to SBR your rifle you will have to fill out the forms, fingerprints, etc and send $200.00 to the ATF for the tax stamp. After a long wait, you will get the approved paperwork back from the ATF. You can then have the barrel chopped/threaded/whatever. It might be cheaper to have the current barrel cut and threaded rather than paying for installation of a new barrel, but thats up to you. Range rules vary on SBR/SBS, FA, Supressors etc, but be sure to keep copies of your paperwork with the rifle. I usually make a ton of copies and keep the originals in a safe place, and stuff copies in my range bag.

As for the MKE AT94-P, ATI imported them from MKE in Turkey. As of now they are no longer being imported. Most stock has dried up, but HKparts.net still has some for sale and you can always check the secondary market. The other options in the Bellator Arms 'K' clone (Atlantic Firearms has these), if the K is your thing. Good luck.

How good are you at Dremel tool use? I don't own one, I've only seen pictures. My guess is that your dealer can get it for a low price is, by the time you have adapted the AT-94A2 you will have spent more to convert it into "Non Sporting Use" configuration than you would to just convert the 16" pistol. Good luck with your clone project.

If he does the Dremel work himself (cutting out the magazine well bars and cutting the butt stock off of the lower, the rest of the parts cost would b the same. Easiest things to replace to comply with 922r is: trigger, sear, hammer, cocking handle and you would have to replace the buttstock and forearm that are on there with US parts. If the lower couldn't be salvaged or you don't want to mess with it, you can replace the lower and keep one of the other parts in there.

When the pistol and rifle were both available at the same price, the pistol was a no-brainer. Now with the limited supply of pistols and their price premium, there's definitely some money to be saved by converting the rifle.

If your end goal is an SBR, I would recommend looking at a BMP painted upper, building it out as a pistol and then throwing a stock on it when your Form 1 comes back. If you price out the parts you have to replace on the MKE to get it compliant as well as the $250-ish for the cutting, threading and 3-lugging barrel, you could probably save a decent buck.

Or if you hold off a bit, just a regular old Form 4 sent in with NO LEO signature... the new Forms are the holdup at this minute. The signature-less deal has been approved... so you don't even have to go to the expense of a trust anymore.

A few months ago an hkpro member sold a Ghillie build CMP, built from a MKE AT-94A2 on an LSC flat. If I remember the story correctly he was having similar issues with the neutered 94 and decided this was the way to go. The pics he posted looked great, as nice as any Ghille build I've seen on the forum. Overall price of his MKE AT-94A2 was probably less than an HK MP5 parts kit.

Sounds like that CLEO signoff removal will take a while to go through the pipeline. I would not hold off on a purchase waiting for that. Also, if you HAVE to form a trust now because your local jerk won't sign, there's many benefits to that anyways, so you're not really losing out.

It has the stamp of approval, I would imagine they are arguing about what the new Form is going to look like, color, etc.

Iffen I was you, I'd get going on whatever you intend to do, because once that Form HAS been approved and people start using it, look for wait times to increase ten-fold. Every swinging **** from Madawaska, Maine to Chula Vista, Kalifornia that couldn't get an LEO sign-off will be filing Forms.
