Is there something unique about the MR762A1 in comparison to other 7.62 x 51 rifles where the MR762A1 can fire both the Winchester .308 and the 7.62 x 51 NATO ammo without being concerned about the higher pressure from the .308 vs the 7.62 that is discussed in the link below and other numerous web sites?

If no, there is no such warning in the H&K operator’s manual. The manual: “Use only high quality 7.62 x 51 mm NATO or Caliber .308 Winchester ammunition in the MR762A1 rifle.”

I wondered the same thing and sent HK an email. Here is the reply:

Sir,

It is safe to shoot .308 through your rifle. We also noted it in the owners manual on page 17. Not sure if you received your owners manual if you did not please let us know as this is an important item you should have.

My guess is that the MR762 was purposely built to allow the operator to fire any commercial load available in .308 Winchester in addition to 7.62x51 NATO. I am sure one of the more knowledgeable forum members will give you a more definitive answer shortly but i just wanted to share the email with you.

HK MR308 (worldwide alter ego for MR726) is designated as .308win. I believe that both rifles are build to .308win spec, while for marketing (and political corectness) reasons HK names it "hunting calibre .308win" for "lefty" Europe and as "able to take military 7.62x51 NATO cartridge" for US market specific needs.

If I'm not mistaken those are steel jackets with a thin coating of copper. Don't think I would run those thru my 762 match barrel.

One thing here is that European manufacturers have only one standard for .308win as far as I know. Same as with .223Rem. 7.62x51 and 5.56x45 are just alternate method of marking the same cartridge. This comes from C.I.P proofing which has only one spec on both calibers, and that matches the high pressure American variant in order not to cause ka-booms with any of the cartridges on the market.

I believe as at least the barrel blanks for MR762 (and many of the other parts) come from Europe, the gun is safe to fire with any SAAMI / C.I.P proofed cartridge.

I talked with HK customer service and was informed that steel jackets are harder than copper jacketed lead bullets and can cause more wear to the barrel. Also said the 762 would, as Jippo stated, safely work with the 308 cartridge if it met SAAMI specs. Winchester 762x51 FMJ white box also has a steel jacket, not copper over lead. Take a small magnet and touch the bullet if it sticks its steel, not good.

I am new to firearms, so how does one confirm that the ammo that he or she is purchasing is designed to NATO or SAAMI specifIcations? Is all modern-day factory-loaded ammo purchased today considered SAAMI compliant if not labeled NATO?

Not necessary. It can be also CIP comliant. SAAMI is US only and is more less voluntary to use. CIP is international and in countries that signed CIP agreement it is mandatory to comply with CIP both in firearms and in ammo. Some US manufacturers make their ammo to be both SAAMI and CIP compliant (later to be able to export ammo to CIP countries).
