Hey guys,

I just thought I'd show off some pics of my new holster. I am totally in love with this rig. It was designed and made by Tim Thurner of TT Gunleather, however, it wears the Occidental Leather brand name on it. This holster is actually called the Stronghold Phoenix. Stronghold seems to be a smaller branch of Occidental Leather that specifically makes gun leather products.

I was having problems with the first holster I ordered from TT Gunleather (also pictured below for comparison). It was their reinforced-mouth IWB "Mike's Special" holster. The "Mike's Special" designation means that the holster is designed similarly to their normal IWB holster, except it positions the pistol about 3/4" lower. This is supposed to reduce the potential for the grip to print through your shirt. While it does this very well, I found that it made the pistol hard to access when trying to draw the pistol. With the entire pistol being positioned lower, it doesn't leave very much room between the grip and the belt loop. I have average-sized male hands and my middle-finger knuckle kept rubbing against the belt loop when I grip the gun just before I draw. The Mike's Special is also advertised to have slightly more cant (forward angle) to it, but it varies from gun to gun, and for my P2000sk there really was no increase in forward cant. In other words, the holster is still of superb quality (fit and finish), but this particular design didn't work well for me.

Tim prides himself on making his customers happy. He saw that I was having trouble with my holster and offered to make me a replacement. I visited his website and noticed the Stronghold Phoenix holster. I liked it right away because it seemed to keep the grip higher above the belt loop, so I knew it wouldn't suffer from the same problem as the other holster. Tim even allowed me to explain to him that I wanted the trigger guard opening of the holster to be positioned higher so I wouldn't run into the same problem. He really went out of his way to make it right for me, and I could not be any more appreciative. Tim is a stand-up guy and has really won me over with this one. I will be using him in the future for all my holster needs. If you are looking for the best rig money can buy, you need to give him a call.

Two more things that I love about this holster over the other one are the longer, more protective sweat shield and the thinner profile at the mouth of the holster. I didn't want shark skin this time around (don't even know if it's an option for the Phoenix holster), because I wanted the mouth of the holster to be as thin as possible. The shark skin will add some width to it. Besides the lack of shark skin, the Stronghold Phoenix seems to use a thinner insert (metal instead of plastic???) at the mouth of the holster. The result is a much thinner profile at the mouth of the holster than what I had before. This holster is perfect..I love it! Now it's time for some pictures.

Thanks gtmtnbiker. The wait for the Mikes Special was like 22 weeks, but I only waited a week for the replacement holster.

ggmanning- The body side of the holster is finished just as beautifully. The Stronghold Phoenix doesn't even have any rivets exposed where the belt loops are attached like the Mike's Special does.

Also, I forgot to mention before that I still have the Mike's Special. The Stronghold Phoenix is more expensive, so I payed him the difference to "upgrade," but he insisted that I keep my old holster too! I guess he figured since I waited almost six months for it and never used it for another six months once I got it that he'd sweeten the deal a little bit by letting me keep the old holster.

So if you are interested in taking the Mike's Special off my hands just send me a PM or email. ([email protected]) It's still an amazing holster, but it will probably work better for someone will smaller hands or skinnier fingers.

I like the lower set and have been using a Cross-Breed super tuck for a couple of years for that reason. Wears great but not nearly as pleasing to the eye as your holster.

Very nice. So to be clear, somebody else makes this holster to Tim Thurners specs? Or is it made by Tim himself?
When I was on the phone with Tim, he mentioned that he was at the Occidental firm. So I'm guessing he makes them for/with Occidental on contract or agreement. The Phoenix IWB holster is advertised as "designed by Tim Thurner." Stronghold is a product line under Occidental. Kind of confusing, I know.

As for holster wear on the finish of the gun, it's typical of any leather holster. The edges of the pistol get slightly shiny, but the metal underneath the black finish isn't visible or anything. Leather tends to wear the finish more evenly than kydex/plastic holsters, which tend to wear the finish off the corners rather quickly.

I actually design them and trained a couple of leather craftsman to make the holsters for Occidental, I do not make them myself.
I work down at Occidental a couple days a week just overseeing the quality, and working on finish work on my own orders. It is a family business I have been at for 25 years.
Sorry to interject. I just wanted to clear up any confusion.

CPshooter, thank you for the review.

Well, there you have it! From the man himself...

Thanks again for a fantastic holster and top-notch customer service Tim!

I think H&K pistols are the best, so it's only right to carry it in the best holster available. Tim's work is as good as it gets.

I received the Phoenix and the Pancake holster along with some mag carriers from Occidental a few weeks ago. So far, I really like them. They've replaced my Milt Sparks holsters, yes, they are that good.

Good looking leather, no doubt. What does that stitched-in sight channel accomplish in comparison to a boned-in crease? I like it but am curious if it has a purpose other than aesthetic flair.

Can you elaborate on your comparison to the VMII, please. I have entertained buying an Occidental for my new PSP but am very fond of my other Sparks leather. Do you see any areas where the Sparks excels in comparison to the Occidental, and vice versa.

It seems that you prefer the Occidental. I'd love you to sell me on one. I hate waiting 6 months for a holster.

Fine looking holster OP!

I'm a bit confused between Occidental and TT Gunleather, where do I order a Stronghold Phoenix for my P2000 Sk?

Thanks very much.
