Looking to get into the HK .308 platform. What are the most common Optics used on real-world HK 417s (and in my world MR762). I know it is not intended to be some kind of über bench rest wonder gun shooting finely tuned hand loads, but ... what kind of optics are used on it in the real world? I was looking at Schmidt & Benders, everything from a 12.5-50 to a 1-8 scope. Thanks in advanced for any thoughts and suggestions.

It all depends on what you plan to use it for. Precision marksmanship is what I focus on mostly and back in 2015 I bit the bullet on an S&B 3-20x Ultra Short. I chose that scope over their normal 3-20x PMII because it has more elevation range to work with and flat turrets to mount an RDS on top. There are plenty of other precision scopes for shooting this rifle out to 1000m. If I was using it as more of a run-n-gun battle rifle, I'd run a 1-8x variant or a 1.5-6x Spectre.

I think you need to figure out what you want to do with the rifle first and then choose a optic for that.

I use my MR762 as a "precision rifle" so I have a NF 3-15x50 on it. I hope to some day put a 1-8x24S&B on my second MR762.

I ran a G28 improved setup on my MR308-G28 for a while. I actually still do, but will move the "chunk of 5x25x56" to my .338LM.
It really depends on the philosophy of use. If I want to engage targets as accurately as possible, yes, by all means, a large chunk of glass shards embedded in a metal tube on top. Or if your ROE dictate very good target id, like the Germans in A-STan opting for that 25x opticfor that reason.

If you intend to hit a 30x50cm target (so about 12 by 20 inches for you USA'ians), out to 800 yards, a good 6x is all you need to be very much in the comfort zone. And you will have a significantly more flexible weapons system.

If you intend to be a marksman as precise as possible with competition shooting, by all means get that huge chunk of optic on the rifle, get it as heavy as possible to migitate recoil, and kit it out. But its not going to be a practical weapon anymore.

The "High Power" 1-8...NEAT! I like the cut of your jib @fatmat. You should bring it on a fieldtrip downstate and let those beauties stretch their legs...

Thanks dms16, I'm still going to change the LaRue mount to a similar Era-Tac so it still has to be mounted/leveled.
As @dms16 said, looks great. I'd love to know how the High Power 1-8 compares to the PMII Short Dot 1-8.

PS -I went with a Geissele mount for short dot 1-8. Couldn't decide on which ERATAC so I let Geissele decide for me.

I have a Vortex Razor HD Gen II 4.5x27x56 MOA with the EBR-2C reticle on order for my MR762. I do a lot of distance shooting, and the 4.5-27x56 is the same length and only 1 ounce heavier than the 3-18. Price difference was only about $75 more as well, so it was a no brainer. Now to wait 1-2 months since it is on backorder.

I am also using my MR762LRP as a precision rifle . I swapped and sold the Leupold that came with it and installed a Nightforce 2.5-10x32 Compact NXS . I felt it was a great match for my set up . Doesn't matter if I am shooting at 50 m or > 500, it seems to do the trick .

I put this on my MR556 upper but I like it for a 762 rifle as well - the new Trijicon 1-8x Accupower. I really like this scope for hogs, coyotes, prairie dogs etc. I was also considering the Kahles K 1-6x. But this is for a general all-around utility rifle for a precision rifle I'd go with the Nightforce or S&B or the Kahles 6-24.
