EDIT: Adding the video;
I haven't had much time lately to make videos for my channel but I thought I would to showcase Dougs work.

I didn't want to resurrect my old thread. I've been contemplating getting slide serrations cut into the top of my P30L. The guy that will be doing it has created a niche in the combat carry market for increasing pistol manipulation under harsh conditions like being muddy bloody or injured.

I am thinking about serrations that match the front side serrations that go down the entire length of the slide.

Give me your ideas of how you think they should be cut. I'm dropping it off on monday and deciding on how it's going to be cut.

Sounds like it could be interesting and new. The one thing I would keep in mind is the top seem on the P30 slide... It does have one right? Would that maybe interfere with the flow of your serrations?

As for Nickel Boron.. I have no experience with it. Looks nice enough though!
I've seen were others have machined serrations and refinished the slide, however I do prefer the pattern he's using. As for refinishing are you planning to do both slide and frame? Don't forget finished pictures.
I like the slide serrations alot. On mine, I would go with 1/2 the depth the ones in the picture are cut.
I think you could accomplish the same thing with grip tape.

Considering the frame is polymer, I don't think it'll take too well to nickel boron or melonite........

Wolvee,

Thanks for dropping me the PM. Personally, I think nickel boron is pretty cool and would prefer it to nickel teflon, like NP3. Between that and melonite, I'm undecided as well.
yeah, no melonite on the polymer. :0)P I wanted to drop off the 30L and talk to him on Friday but he's gone all weekend.
This picture is not mine. I saved it a while back hoping to one day have this done to my P30L. I know it is a 45, but hopefully it will help you visualize your concept on an HK instead of a nasty M&P ;)

Doug at ATI does amazing work. I've heard good things about nickel boron, but no first hand experience with it on guns. On knife blades it holds up pretty well and corrosion resistance is decent.

Ummm IT IS MELONITE ON THE SLIDE!!! Also known as nitrodcarburizing. Google will be your friend.

The serrations are nice dirt collectors!
The Nickel Boron Fail Zero does is white, its still Nickel based, I doubt its harder than hard chrome. Melonite is nice, its applied at high temps 1050+, I realize HK may be using that high temp application for HE, but for me once is enough. If I want the best black finish, Im going with IonBond Diamond Black, it what I went with on my heavily modified Browning Hi-Power, the Mark II Hi-Power can not endure the high temps Melonite is applied at. Say what? WTF are you talking about?

I never said there wasn't melonite on the slide. Someone asked if he was going to do the frame as well as the slide, hence my comment about getting the frame melonited or plated.

I know what QPQ/Melonite/HE/Tennifer/ferritic nitrocarburizing is. I don't know what nitrodcarburization is, however. We've been through this before.

As to getting the slide melonite treated or plated, I wrote that because I'm also undecided as which to do if it were my gun. After he gets the milling done, there will be exposed carbon steel without the nitrocarburizing. The question is whether to get the slide re-nitrocarb'd so that all of the carbon steel is once again protected through nitrocarburization, or to get it plated in nickel boron.
I'm still undecided about the slide finish. Which of the two has better wear characteristics? I'm going to head up there in a little bit.

Well, you can't wear off nitrocarburizing. It's a treatment of the steel....it'll basically be the same thing as what your P30 has now. The black finish (black oxide or parkerizing, depends on what they do) will develop character, but it will always be protected unless you get more milling work done.

What do you guys think of nickle boron coatings?

How is the round going to eject?
How is the round going to eject?
FWIW, I never had trouble with a round ejecting when I rack the top of the slide against my leg....not a hand, but I don't see why it'd be different.

I too would think the round would be blocked, but I haven't found it to be a problem. Probably because the gun is getting pushed off my leg....I don't hold it against my leg the entire time. I dig the slide/sights into my thigh, them briskly rack it.
In that picture he was going slow for the camera to just show how much bite the serrations have against your hand or leg or what have you.

I dropped it off tonight and he's going to try an match the arch of the side serrations. Honestly I could care less really but whatever he decides to do is OK by me. The guy really is an artist with his work so I know it's going to be effective and not look like an abortion.

I just went with melonite instead of doing the Nickel Boron. After it gets done I might give him my SK to go crazy on.

I'll post pictures when it's done. I'm stoked.
This is Steve Fisher from MDFI and Magpul Dynamics (The iron beards replacement, lol. ) This was his idea with Doug from ATEi doing the design & fabricating. For a combat/defensive pistol I think anything that helps you get home after a gun fight is a worthy thing to do. It's all about who cheats best, the criminal who surprises you with with an attack or a trained CCW/CPL holder that uses everything to his advantage.

Are you in Law Enforcement? For any civi', i think owning a HK is "cheating." You have the upper hand, you have a tactical advantage  lol

Neat. Don't think i could do it to my P30. Would like to see it on yours though, see what the end result is. Keep us posted!
