Okay, got a PTR 91 GI on order, in the mail and in route to my FFL. I am pretty pumped...it is my 3rd HK clone for the herd. Got my order in to RTG for some extra goods. I do have some questions for PTR GI owners.

1. Can you recommend some bulk ammo that worked for you?

2. I am gonna check bolt gap and try and run 100-200 rds through it and see how it goes.....see where the gap goes. I want to eventually duracoat the gun hk black. I know I have 1 year warranty and I read a lot of threads on this and other forums. My rifle is in the 800+ serial number range.

At what point would you feel I am good to go with bolt gap settling in and trunnion checks before I am good to go for the actual duracoating?

3. Any other recommendations? I will get the RTG G3/91 survival kit at some point.

THX in advance.

i think PRVI is probably a very safe bet. AIM has some for under $0.50/round. this is about the same price as the Malaysian, DAG and Chilean surplus that is currently available. i prefer the DAG but some PTR's don't like it, so for a new rifle i would start out with "commercial" ammunition, and the PRVI should fit the bill.

CURRENTLY the only source that i know of for DAG, is The Sportsman's Guide.

PORT may be available from SAMCO, but i hear so many horror stories about them, i am reluctant to order. also, a lot of the PORT currently available is slightly corroded. in my experience is does not seem to affect function but it does seem to affect accuracy.

the PRVI is every bit as accurate as the DAG and PORT, which are the most accurate of the surplus ammunition, in my experience.

i have no experience with the Malaysian or Chilean surplus, so i can't comment on them.

the Brown Bear ammunition is a little cheaper, it can usually be found for around $0.40/round, but it isn't anywhere near as accurate as the PRVI (or PORT or DAG, for that matter).

i would recommend you buy a Gen 1 Hensoldt from Cheaper than Dirt, for $300, or from Robert RG for a little more.

Robert RG also has "survival kits" that should cover a lot of the other items you may need.

If you hit a gun show locally you might find some good surplus at a "REASONABLE" price.
I ran American Eagle through mine for the reason it ALWAYS worked in all the JLD/PTR guns.
It was around $12 a box at CTD last time I looked.
I would jump on as many magazines, different size rollers, assorted springs, firing pins, stocks, hand guards, locking pieces, ect.
The RTG survival kits are a good idea, of course, and while CTD has the G3 magazines at a fair price (FOR NOW!!), STOCK UP NOW!
Good luck on your new G.I. They are fabulous pieces if the trunnion is OK (by now, in the production run, it should be).
Basically though, on the spares, you need at least one of everything (not barrels and big stuff like that) while it's still "READILY" available!!
If you can't get a HENSHOLDT scope and kit, at least get an original CLAW mount (NOT A KNOCK OFF MOUNT BY ANYONE ELSE), put a PICATINNY rail on it and any scope you want.
About the number of rounds, hard to say. Some on this site have done 50 or less and cracked while others got several hundred before cracking. Mine fell right in the cracking trunnion range, and I have put over 1000 rounds with no crack so far!
I DID have a bolt gap which came out of the box at .018" and was at .006" within about 300 rounds.
I replaced my bolt head and locking piece (both marked US) with real H&K parts (I had left over from the 80's) and my gap has held at .018"/.019" for almost 800 rounds.
Just something to look at if you gap drops drastically but the trunnion is still OK and not cracked. It seems like, in truth, only a small number actually cracked so far, but I have no idea how many. I do have friends on HKPro that DID have cracked trunnions and PTR made it right!
BEST OF LUCK TO YOU!!
BANGER

Again, I would stock up on everything you can afford/find while you can LEGALLY still do so!!

I believe the PTR GI they loosened up the tolerances, so from what I heard it will eat anything you feed it!

Classic Arms and Ammo Man usually have good deals on ammo. You might give them a look. Classic Arms has some FN. I put a lot of rounds through a 91 I used to have and it was really good stuff.

The PORT ammop from samco is slightly oxidized from the cardboard, but works and shoots more accurate than most m-80 ball. I have plenty of it. Wideners has some FN for $88 /200 rnds. Go to cheaper than dirt and get the 150gr BVAC reloads. $116 deliverd for 250rnds. They shoot very accurate and are loaded on once fired LC brass. VERY good clean stuff and its on par with my HIRTENBERGER stuff to boot. JUST SAYIN! Wideners is already out of the Santa barbara 81' they had for 88$ for 200rnds. Good stufftoo. EDIT: Cheaper than dirt is outof the BVAC bulk at the moment. They will get more,it sells out fast guy,s. But its great in the PTR rifles. Sportsmans guide is waiting for a shipment of PORTUGESE on march 6th. I already ordered mine.

i got some slightly corroded PORT from Graf and Sons, there was a noticeable difference in the degree of accuracy vs. my clean PORT surplus.

and yes, still more accurate than Winchester or Brown Bear.

just my experience.

Thx guys...the ammo choices were exactly what I was looking for. I moonlight at Academy Sports...gonna pick up a few boxes of Monarch .308 which is actually made by PRVI for us. 145grn steel case. Since I get a little employee discount, it may be a cheap way to buy a little bit of bulk for the shelf if it cycles good.

Def looking at the BVAC and Port ammo you guys referenced for a purchase this week too.

I think I am gonna wait until 500 rds+ are down the tube to check bolt gap, etc before I duracoat it black.

Good news is my FFL called today, I pick my new baby up tomorrow night.

Okay, got my GI in last pm.....she is puuuuuuuurdy :). I will post a pic this weekend once I get my RTG package in and swap out the green stocks.

I have to say, I sure hope she performs as good as she looks. Bolt Gap appears to be approx .15+ but I did not clean her up yet internally...it was a long day before I got home.

Pics to post soon. Buying some of that Monarch to take a test run and put some rounds down range....then I will likely buy from CTD or SAMCO, etc....

Pick up some of the Russian steel cased stuff. Barnaul if you can find it. Major muzzle flash to excite the other shooters.

A G21 buttpad and Wide Forearm MIGHT make it more comfortable or you. The buttpad holds your shoulder better and the wide guard, WHILE NOT AS COMFORTABLE (IMO-FOR ME) keeps the hand cooler. It also provides a bipod mount. You might think about a wood set if RTG still has them. The last ones I got were pristine and all I did was steel wool and oil them.
I put a sling swivel stud in the second hole of my wood forarms so I can mount a HARRIS (or WalMart Copy) Bipod easily. Been working for years that way on my PTR 91F.
And now the GI.

Hey guys, I'm new to the forum and have my first ptr GI en route. I noticed a couple of you have referenced Robert RG for survival kits.... Where do I find Robert RG?

So far in FMJ I've shot 80s POF delinked, 80s's S&B corrosive, Silver bear, Brown Bear, Wolf, & Tula. In SP Hunting spec I've fired Silver Bear, Federal Winchester & Remington.

None of the ammo I've fired keeps me from hitting a 12" gong at 300m

I figure it's all good.

I got my G.I. in and shot it with iron sights to see if it would run before I mounted the scope etc. The Fabrique Nationale ammo that shoots 1/2 MOA in my HK-91 did not like the G.I. after a couple of mags it would not eject right. I called PTR they handled my call and were a big help even though I was Pi**ed. Chris was so helpful it cooled me off. I spent twice the price on the accessories than the rifle cost and it would not run my Holy Graille ammo that I had a pallet of. My HK-91 eats it like a AK-47 and shoots like a bull barreled bolt gun but the G.I. would not. Chris explained the reason was the out of spec chamber in the HK and the .020 clearence in the neck that makes the flutes work better, but that would open them up to liability if someone tried to reload that brass. That made since, and in OBamageddon I cannot afford two more HK-91's the PTR's will have to work. They told me to break it in with cheap steel stuff so I did with Silver Bear and it ate it without a hitch. I had already fire-lapped it and with a 6-oclock hold with a filed narrower front site it shot under a inch with irons at a 100 yards off the bench. So I shut-up and am selling my Holy Graille ammo to get something the G.I. will cycle, and I can't wait to see what it will do with good ammo, a lead sled, B&T mount and 3-9 Burris LRS scope. I had a amazing Bill Sprinfield trigger pack here for a spare for the HK-91 so that's already in it, and a wide forend. You're going to like that rifle. -----------You need to P.M. TCR39 about the HK locking piece and +2 rollers. He's been there and done that, no sense in trying to re-invent the wheel, and those items were cheap and cures the bolt gap issue. Enjoy your new baby. Ken

Chris told you the HK chamber was out of spec? That's interesting. The PTR would not run but the HK did and the HK has the problem? I think not.

I,ve always known that the early JLD rifles have TIGHTER chambers initially then the newer 11 flute chamber green mountain barrels. I just dont undertand why PTR INC. can,t make an exact copy of a g3 barrel with 12 flutes and 4 groove rifling that is in SPEC? First they went to 10 flutes and that was switched quickly back to 12 in the later JLD builds. Then the AW#TC barrels had shallow flutes, now they are using 11 flutes in green mnt barrels. This is quite INSANE,sorry guy,s. Both my JLD rifles run flawless and are deadly accurate with quality surplus/nato 7.62. If you guy,s want to shoot russian/chicom crap, thats your deal. Its fine for shattered or ghillie who both shoot FULL AUTO extensively.I TARGET SHOOT!! I have not had ONE problem with serial range A#3000to A# 6000 JLD with rheinmetall carriers /euro bolt heads and many HK parts, backplates HK,recoil buffer HK/rheinmetall and not to mention German cocking tubes and not the soft U.S. steel cocking tubes that wear very rapidly in the lock up notch area,. I,m done now! If you want a flawless rifle, just buy an hk91 or be prepared to do alittle RESEARCH gentleman. I,ve tried to help.
