Question ref a gunshow find: Old style G3 retractable stock

Hello all,

At the last gunshow, I found an old style G3 retractable stock with the concave buttplate. It was supposed to be new, and appears so. It has the HK stamp on the bottom of the back plate. However, the fit of the rear protective cover to the back plate is poor. There is a large gap between them and it rattles. I don't think this is normal. Would it be safe to mount on my rifle and be OK to fire? Also, does the buffer appear complete? I have some pictures I'll post.

Thanks for any help.

Great find.

It is safe. The rattle that you are referring to is the dust cover that is attached via the 2 split pins that are visible above and below the buffer. The buffer is complete and aside from the split pin issue, I don't see anything wrong with the stock. You might talk to HKPRO member gunplumber and see if he has devised a way to correct the issue with the split pins; I know he is aware that they can become loose with time. I have an A3 in similar condition that I am considering disassembling to see if I can remedy the pins.

Best,

TC
Thanks for the reply,

It came in a plastic bag that was already opened up. The seller said he bought it for a CETME but it did not fit. I talked him down to $90 for it. I think I came out OK.

You did well! I think I paid around $+/-235 for mine (concave) several years ago; I don't remember where I bought it (online). It was still boxed and sealed and has a black painted finish.

Best,
