Hello everyone I recently bought a beautiful example of an HK-91 at a local gun show. The man I bought it from said he bought it from the original purchaser and that he had fired 5 rounds out of it when he first bought it and never fired it again. The rifle appears to bear out that statement in its condition from what I can tell.

I am by no means new to guns or to HK's for that matter but I wanted to list what all I received with the rifle and get some opinions on what else I should add to the package if anything and of course get some opinions as to whether this is a rifle I should keep ahold of and not shoot or if I am ok to put some rounds through it and not affect the value/collectability of it greatly.

I guess in short I was simply looking for opinions, thoughts, and suggestions on the rifle.

Package contents:
HK-91 with "IB" date code in absolutely impeccable condition. The ONLY place I see any evidence of wear or use is on the very bottom edge of the magwell where it looks like a few places have been dinged by a magazine being inserted and inside of the magwell there are a few minor scuffs. The rest of the gun is absolutely perfect.

German claw mount with Hensoldt Wetzlar scope in perfect flawless condition
HK "IB" dated wide handguard (no bipod)
Narrow slim black handguard
Muzzle cap still on rifle
Carry handle
HK collapsible stock (standard solid stock is on the rifle)
4 HK "IB" date coded magazines inside of two rubber magazine carriers marked "made in Germany".

I very much would like to locate a bipod that would be correct to my rifle and I would like comments/suggestions as to if I should shoot it or keep it as a collector item and also what other items I should be looking for to make it as "complete" as it can be. Any thoughts or opinions are welcome.

I will post photos later tonight.

Go ahead and shoot it. While the value of a preban 91 goes up, they aren’t exactly rare. You have some nice accessories too.

You didn’t mention a sling, but that is a good accessory to have. Maybe a cleaning kit. Avoid the case buffers. They scratch up the receiver finish.

Keep this in mind if you decide NOT to shoot it...Fast forward to a time in the future....If I was the potential buyer - I would be put off by the fact you would say "unfired" then proceed to tell me the guy you bought it from only put 5 rounds down the tube- I really don't know that--5 or 500- However, from the looks of the ejection port, I would concur with the only "5 rounds", BUT some guys use electrical tape around the port to protect the finish-- so 5 or 500 who knows? --Guess what?- It's not unfired.

So, in short- Shoot it- Its value has been changed already.

It does look pristine, and in excellent condition, and congratulations on your find... IMO - Do what you want, shoot it, enshrine it, whatever brings joy to you. But, just remember, it's not an unfired weapon-- I'd shoot it-. Good luck.

An unfired rifle from 81' should have come with a bipod installed. Mine sure did, although it wasn't unfired at the time of purchase.

Something about how that appears "put together" smells fishy to me.......I certainly hope you didn't pay a premium price for that rifle. Regardless, it is still a 91 and still a nice rifle.

I'm betting a lot of that was sourced from RTG and put on afterward, including the sling. I have four or 5 of those slings sitting in my basement.

Heck, I even have a spare Hensholdt that I picked up when they were available, waiting for something on which to mount.
