I am building a PTR-91, and am installing the weld-on rail from HKParts.net. The scope I am thinking of using is a Millett DMS-1 or TMS-1 on a Burrris P.E.P.R. mount. Will this work, or should I mount it a different way or consider a different scope? Yes, I am using the MagPul PRS stock; no I will not consider a scope that I have to cash in my retirement in order to buy, and I want it to be low enough so I can maintain proper cheek weld. I know some people like to mount their scopes so high that they get a nosebleed when they go to look through it; I don't. Any input is appreciated.

I got a rail mount on the MM23eK and was also looking at the Vortex Viper PST 1 to 4 and the Burris MTAC 1x4, along with the Elcan Spectra DR for too much more ($1800).
Would be interested in what you decide on.

When setting up the scope, if you remove (or don't have installed) the rear sight, then can get a lower scope mount. Have to watch some of the AR type mounts, as most raise the scope to the proper height for an AR with it's straight stock. The higher scopes work ok with a stock having a raised cheek piece, however, is a personnel preference issue.

I went through this a few weeks ago. Whether 4x will provide enough magnification depends upon your eyesight and the distance to target. I am 58 years old and will be shooting up to 250 yards so for me 1-4x was not enough. I went with a Vortex Diamondback 3-9x (about $200) and I'm very pleased.

Plus of course the size and contrast of the target. Always figured ten power was more than enough, until started shooting the 5.5x22 on the Sako TRG42 338LM and after a few days was reaching up to raise the power even though it was at max ;-). Have done ok with an aim point at 300 yards but were just shooting balloons, plus the "fun switch" was used at times.

These mounts will allow you to still use your open sights:

But you'd need to get use to the "nose bleeds" LOL!!!
Do they let you use a port buffer aswell?

whats wrong with using a claw mount? i picked up one of these a while back:

Hensoldt ZF Model One Scope with HK Claw Mount - Original German Military Surplus Sniper Scope - Keepshooting®

you could look at one of these:

ARMS HK Claw Mount - HKPARTS.NET
I just prefer to be able to be able to pick up and handle all of my weapons the same; in other words, I don't want to have to crane my neck in a certain direction and lose cheek weld on a certain weapon. The MagPul PRS will help with some of that; cosmetically, I don't like the bulky look of the claw mount. Seems to sit too high for me.

Thanks for the info; I don't have the rear sight installed as of yet, but the rear sight piece is welded to the receiver (it came like that from PTR). With that, I'm thinking of using the Millett DMS-1 with Weaver Tactical mid-height rings. Now, that begs the question: since I will not have the rear sight installed, what can I do about the front sight? Do I have to leave the front sight ring in place, or is there a way to remove it, and make it a double ring setup? I know this will probably be a "one-off" build, but considering that parts are expensive and hard to come by anyway, and since this is a custom build, I don't see a problem with this. I haven't gotten to this point in the build yet, but I'd rather figure out what to do now, instead of holding up the build.

You may find that the front sight is not an issue, however, one option for a semi custom build is to remove the front sight and the rear sight base, then add rails at both locations, similar to what one of the guys did for his MM23eK. If you wish to have BUIS then there are several lower height folding front and rear iron sights for the HK 4xx series of guns and similar raised rail guns, that may work (have not tried myself).

You might give the claw mounts a try if you have somewhere to get get your hands on one b4 you decide. I have never found myself really out of position with the claw mounts and an a-2 stock. With the butt stock you have, won't it have a cheek piece thats adjustable? The beauty of the claw mount for me is you can switch to what ever optics you need for whatever kind of shooting your doing. This is without rezero of your scope. Port buffers work with the claw mounts. For optics the zf-1 is sweet. For targets farther out I picked up a surplus mount and put a Burris full field on it. The burris has held up well and even has the p-4 german reticle. For me I would just hate to give up my iron sites. Drop the rifle throw it or whatever, the irons will be there for you. Good luck and have fun.

Thanks for the info; based on your pic, I may go with the Burris PEPR mount and DMS-1. Your setup looks quite nice though, and I may go with the omitted front and rear sight and just use back-up sights with a quick release base and mount.
