Hi Gang
I have a G3 clone , a sporter in 308 . Every part with a G3 is interchangeable. It has a fixed stock and i am thinking to go for a retractable stock . But some fellas tell me its not a good thought as the retractable stock is not comfortable . Even a cheek weld is a problem . Is it true ? .

I am not fond of wasting ammo and i wish each of my bullet to hit the target at range , so cheek weld is an important thing for me .

The collective wisdom of the forum is requested to guide me as to should i go ahead with retractable stockor not

The collapsable stocks suck for actual shooting. To add to that, they are a bit expensive. Unless it's really important to you personally, or the money isn't a big deal, the fixed stock will serve you better.

In my opinion, the size and shape of the butt plate leave a bit to be desired. It does not engage the shoulder well, and it doesn't tend to stay put once its there. The cheek weld is also lame. You might hear people refer to the collapsable stock as the 'meat tenderizer'; not only does it look like one, it acts like one.

With the smaller caliber guns it's not so bad because recoil isn't such a factor, but on the .30 cal guns the collapsable stock is weak sauce.

What is your height and body type? I have a HK retractable stock for my PTR, but don't like or use it. I am 6'4" and have longer than normal arms for that height. The HK91/PTR91 butt length is about an inch and a half short for me. If you're shorter than that, maybe you would benefit from a collapsable.

Collapsable stocks recently became legal for Service Rifle, so I put one on an AR for a shooting buddy. He's about 5'7" and had real trouble with the AR15A2 buttstock length. The retractable i put on it was a Magpul UBR, a retractable that allows good cheek weld, even with the stock extended. I can not say enough good about it. On a HK91/PTR91, a UBR would require an adapter to allow an AR-type butt, but I have seen such available. There is an early version of it, and a later version of it, and I see both for sale.

going from a fixed stock to anything other than a fixed stock you will never be happy with the lack of positive lock up. only the side folding galil and fal stock has 100% solid lock up, there maybe others but any hk type non-fixed stock is really CRAP.

I'll be the odd one out and say it isn't as bad as folks make it out to be. No its not as comfortable on your shoulder, but it isn't killer. The cheek weld is harder to return to consistently, but its not like there isn't one. If you have the money you should get one, you might not use it much, but its nice to have the option.

I don't mind the A3 stock. If you go to the range and shoot at paper from the bench then stick with the standard one.
Sheepdog you cray. Both my HK A3 stock are as solid as can be.

I'll be the first to say it's not comfortable to shoot, but it sure looks cool, so I keep them on both my guns. GARY

OP in case you aren't aware, the HK retractable stock is not adjustable like an AR one. It is simply fully in or fully out with no stops in between. Unless you pony up the even more money for the HKParts modified version.

The retractable stock looks great on the rifle. Actual shooting? Your face will not enjoy the .308 ammo.

Try it, then you will LOVE the full stock all over again.

I've got retractable stocks on my POF 5PK and MKE Z43-P and I like them just fine. Previously I had the B&T side folder on my 5PK and while it was a bit more comfortable, I like the convenience and compactness of the retractable.
