Hi Guys,
With help from Ghillebear I finally got my SL8/G36 Bullpup project running. It turned out pretty cool. Its not the best looking gun ever, and the trigger pull is only slightly better than my VP70, but it proves that the SL8/G36 design can be made into a Bullpup. It has a 16.5in barrel and the overall length on the rifle is 30in, imagine how short it could be with a C barrel! I wanted to make the design so that you would not have to modify the upper receiver at all, and I used an old grey SL8-1 forearm and stock since they are super cheap. The forward pistol grip is a cheap US made lower I bought from RCM for $25, but you could also use one of the cheap $7 SUO lowers from Apex. I still need to tweak the cable so it slides smoother, that should help the trigger pull.
You can't wrap your thumb around like a normal pistol grip, you just have to keep it along side the forearm, its not the most comfortable grip but its length of pull is not bad and the weight of the rifle is balanced on your right hand.
I am only doing this project for fun. I know its not perfect, and I would not seriously depend on it. I love the standard setup of the SL8/G36 rifles, I just wanted to try it and see if it would work.
Interesting design, it may work a little nicer if you integrated the buttstock 'pad' into the stock block more, you could shorten the LOP and move the foreward trigger group up a little more.
I wanted to shorten the buttpad even more but it would remove too much material to be safe. Also the forward grip needs to be right in front of the magwell to hide the cable. That was the biggest problem with the grip being out away from the magwell, also it made the gun very back heavy.
Once I get the triggers running more smoothly I will cut off the bottom of the SL8 trigger and close off the bottom of the lower.
Like most bullpups I see for the first time I gag, but eventually they grow on me. This is no different. I wish I could find the time to execute some of my "crazier" ideas as well as you have here. Well done.
I love the idea of this project, and think that the awkward fitting stock can be made to work in later versions, but not having a full grip to put a thumb around would drive me nuts... not to mention how it would decrease my overall control/accuracy.
Props and Kudos for the ingenuity and daring!!! haha It doesn't even look too bad. Glad you included the pic of holding it, that helpfully gives it some scale.
If you were really gung ho on it, you could dremel the rear trigger. Hell, maybe the bundeswehr'll give you a call to contract your design!
