If I don't have an official HK screwdriver, what tool should I get to unscrew hex nut which holds top cover on receiver of my 770 and Sl7? I can't get enough torque with my Wheeler screwdriver because of the angle I guess and my old arthritic hands. Suggestions of what I could pick up in hardware store to do the job?

I normally use a L style hex key in 5mm on my SL6/SL7. Just have to be careful not to scratch the wood. Once you break it loose you can switch back to your screwdriver.

Does one really have to remove scope to do take down?

You could leave it attached to the top cover if you want. If you are using the HK05 quick detach mount its just a simple flip of the lever to remove/attach. If you are using something like a B-Square mount then I understand leaving it on. Whatever works for you. . .
