I've searched and seen where Big Bore has stated the only difference between these two magazines are the length of the lip, and the different floorplate, but nothing detailing this specific question.

Not taking the floorplate into account, how exactly does the shorter mag lip on the standard USP .45 mag prevent it from working properly in the 23?

Considering the 23 mag works fine in the USP, I don't see how it would have any effect whatsoever.

It hasn't had any effect on my Mark 23 or my USP. The USP will accept Mark 23 floor plates but the Mark 23 will not accept USP floor plates.

Gotcha, sorry I don't know all the specifics... I just haven't had any issues with running either magazine in either pistol.
