Hey HK people. I thought I would show you a comparison of the GG&G USP rail adapter vs the Surefire MR09 rail adapter for the H&K USP when using an X300 Surefire light.

For a long while, I just accepted that the GG&G rail was the only affordable and decent option. I used it on my USP for 6 months and just found that my hands were not big enough to really reach the switch in front of the trigger guard. I could activate it, but it was not easy to get to.

I found (and severely overpaid for) a new surefire MR09 adapter on ebay last week, and it is a much nicer mount than the GG&G, plus it moves the x300 backward enough that I can easily get to the switch with my medium sized hands.

Here is a picture comparison for those curious.

You can see that the MR09 tucks the light closer to the trigger guard making light activation much easier for my hand size.

I'm currently bugging Surefire to sell the CAD drawing of the adapter to me for a reproduction run of them. They have not been responsive. Should they chose not to sell me the product, I'll reverse engineer it, change it by 10% and knock it off for the community. The gray market has driven pricing into the stratosphere, and I'd like to make this an affordable option again.

Thoughts?

MR08 arrived on Friday, and I got it to the engineering team this afternoon. The 2 are just slightly different in multiple areas, so I'm going to have them do the full part to make sure we get it right. Fun part is in a pinch an MR08 will work on a full size frame.

I genuinely appreciate the feedback I’m getting here. The guys on Reddit are brutal; so you just learn to grow thicker skin and realize it’s not about you.

This is honestly starting to show a pattern:

.45 caliber frames seem to be the theme. Can all the people who had a loose fit to the frame confirm it’s a .45?
My .40 and 9mm guys have generally been satisfied with frame fit.
Also good to know on the A model of the x300U that a slight adjustment to the slot could accommodate. Or maybe it would be a model of its own?
I will continue with notes. This will require CAD and inventory of a few models of light if I’m ever going to truly make a product that’s worth making. Probably need to buy a .45 too. Maybe I could borrow one if the time comes? I gave up on stocking that caliber a few years back.

anyways, let’s continue to find the common interference between the guns here and get some notes on changes to do to evolve to the MR10.
I’m all for evolution.

Hey everyone-

Wanted to give an update. I have not yet found an MR08 surefire USP compact adapter to reverse engineer. I have finalized the MR09 surefire adapter however and I'm sending the CAD file out for quoting. I don't know how big the market actually is, so I'm going to start with a very small production run of only 100 units. I am toying with the idea of making 5 of them in a RAL8000 and 5 anodized in OD Green. Mostly they will be 7075 aluminum and type 3 hardcoat anodized in black.

There is no laser etching on these, so they won't look like an exact replica, but the part is dimensionally the same as the factory Surefire part.

Here is a quick CAD drawing of it. I'll update when I have lead times and pricing from the machine shop.

I'm also toying with the idea of severely overpaying for a Knight's Armament MP5 optic mount and making a reproduction without the markings so we can get them for under $500 again. Any one interested in that project?

I’ve been getting lots of PMs about blems so let me just make it public:

the parts have been coated in anodizing that was too thick. This is usually not a problem but the assembly person decided to ram the socket head cap machine screws into aluminum with a power tools. The threads of the aluminum are all tore up as are the screws.
So I started running dies down the screws to clean the burrs off, and running taps down each threaded pocket to salvage the parts.
Well the parts came apart like ****. Some bolts broke. Some were broken by the assembly person and bagged and shipped anyway.
Basically I was able to fix 37 of them. I lost 7 to bolt snaps or tap snaps, and I did not bother removing the bolts from the remaining 56.
I just boxed them all up and sent them back.
the other issue that was present with the super thick anodizing was the rail and adapter fit was now a press fit. They would fit, but it was a bit too tight for my liking.
basically if you have a fine thread it should feel smooth like butter. These felt like sheet metal screws coming out of wood.
Not acceptable to me and I don’t want you guys getting parts that won’t be perfect. They cost too much to be anything but flawless.
the machined part is great, the sublet anodizing and assembly was sub.

Massive thanks to @gavar for giving up an in-use MR08 for the betterment of the HK community.

Once it arrives I’ll send it off to get the CAD data and get these going ASAFP. Shouldn’t take too long as the models are not too far off. Don’t need to re-create from scratch.

Machine shop confirms all parts are finished with machining operations. Off to bead blast then to the anodizing area as of this morning.

I’ll post here once they are assembled and ready for shipment. Then you will have a day to prep and I’ll open the shopping cart up and send out the notifications to all on the list.

All orders are packaged and have shipping labels on them. Order before 3pm pacific today and they will go out today.
42 remain. Sold 53 in the first 2 minutes of inventory being live. You guys are animals.
Also I really want some pics of the ODG USP when it’s done. I had to restrain myself from buying one as I really want a tactical model. I hope I don’t regret not buying one.

Hey all-

MR08 USP compact X300 flashlight adapters arrived this morning. Gotta QC them all and get some more shipping envelopes, and I’ll put them up for sale.

Product page is live, but inventory will not be added until Friday, January 24th at 9am pacific standard time.
Restock of MR09 is already delayed from March to April.
As always, I appreciate each one of you and your support in these fun little boutique HK items.

Wanted to give an update on the MR08 compact adapters; they were started later than I was told, and they just got done at the shop. Headed to anodizing now. It is likely they will be ready a day or two before Xmas. I’ll update this thread, and send an email out to all on the list.

I want to clarify my offer:

if the adapter doesn’t fit well on your FRAME, I’ll take it back.

If you’re trying to adapt a light that it wasn’t made for, well I don’t know what to tell you other than I was pretty clear that this was specifically for an X300Ub. I’m not taking returns for you not having the right light. I’ll take returns if it doesn’t fit your frame. These are all well within the tolerance required to fit and work as it should, but it will never fit lights it wasn’t designed for.
If you modify my bracket it will not be available for return.

Wanted to give some of you that emailed me a different look at the CAD model of the part as it seems lasers are a big deal (mini MK23 builds I'm guessing).

The concern you all raised was the drooping of the GG&G mount. This design is a 2 pc vs the GG&G's 3 pc and as such looks like it would be much more rigid. The softer 6061 aluminum that the GG&G is made out of allows the dowels and pins to have a bit of give beyond the tolerance that is required for assembly. The 7075 aluminum the new mount is being made of is much harder and doesn't give as much.

I can't say you won't need to monitor and confirm zero until you feel it is proven, but I'll bet once set and left, it holds pretty damn close.

Image

The part has so many curved surfaces at angles 180 from each other, that this part requires a 7 axis CNC mill to manufacture them. The GG&G being a 3pc can go on a standard mill and get ripped out en mass and on the cheap.

All who have emailed me are on the in stock notification list that will go out from mailchimp once they are on my shopping cart. I'll post here after they are live.

Emailed you.

Maybe worth asking, will these hold zero for a laser? GG&G's biggest flaw is that they will sag, not only does that look awful, it makes them useless. I'd like to run a VIR II IR laser for night vision shenanigans but it's a moot point if this sags as well.
No idea. I don't own a laser to test it with. I'd say if anyone has experience with an OG surefire adapter and a laser, this is expected to perform the same; meaning if it did not hold zero, this one will not either. The dimensions are essentially the same as the MR09, as the end result is the functional position the adapter puts the light in, but cosmetically it is a different look so that I can produce it as a new design. The only item I cannot change is the profile of the USP rail interface, as it is required for fitment. The rest of the mount was updated to be aesthetically pleasing and to pay tribute to the OG look.

I think the 3pc design, 6000 series aluminum, and the wearing of the locating dowels/sockets make the GG&G sag over time. This MR09 reimagining is 7075, and a 2pc design that seems to be much more rigid without much visible flex. It is also why it is so expensive to produce; it has complex geometry that needs a 7 axis mill to complete which adds cost and then needs to mate perfectly with a separate end cap that also fits the rail precisely. It's a bitch of a part but a damn nice flashlight holder thingy.

Please HK, just make a new mold and add a single rail slot to a 1913 standard. It would still look nearly identical but would bring it into 2024. Also add optic cuts, kthxbye.

I'd advise you to test yours and report back should you choose to invest in this one. I hope it meets standard.

Update for everyone:

I have shopped this part to 15 machine shops (all USA based, will not go overseas) and not a single one can get the costs low enough to compete with the gray market price. At the moment the lowest I can get it made, anodized, and packed for shipping is $195.00.
So my plans to expand this to MR08 is off the table (engineering costs are $5k to reverse engineer it) so I’ll make a small batch of 100 parts and call it a bust. I just want to recover my investment at this point and get out.
I’ve ordered my parts and it’s looking like March is when they will be ready. Will not be doing any colors other than black because of high costs to change colors for such a small batch.
Not the news you were all hoping for I’m sure.

This is a very difficult post for me to make, but I feel transparency is better than silence.

These MR08 brackets are not to my quality standards.

I'm devastated to tell you that these will not be offered for sale, and I'm discontinuing the MR09/MR08 for the time being until I can find a better anodizing refinisher here in the states. That will take months from quoting to vetting to sample parts, and then full blown production orders. I am so very sorry that these did not pan out like I had hoped. My investment loss on this is pretty big, so I'll work on sending quotes to new shops this week so we can get you these reproductions.

It's days like today that make me want to close up shop and just go back to being a HK enthusiast. Pretty bummed for us all on this one. I'll update once I have new lead times.
