Thanks for the info G3Kurz. I knew it was XM8 so I was glad to have it; and my wife knew it was HK so she knew I would want it

The XM8 has a very good handguard design. Similar to the original M16 but with much better gripping. And that sloped carry handle right in to the barrel tip help to minimize getting caught on stuff. While I have never had the privilege of handling the real thing, the high-end airsoft one I handled had a bad grip design with no indication that it can be customized, and the overall balance and structure felt too "gangly" and bulky for what it is. I have no doubt the real thing is better, but I can't imagine it would be enough better. It's a great design, but leaves plenty of room for improvement. Still one of the best LOOKING guns ever made IMO. I would love to see an improved version.
