VP9 grip / frame pressure point question

Hi folks...

New VP9 Tactical owner....I'm running into an issue with how the frame hits my strong hand and would like to see if anyone else has run into this....and more importantly what their solution was.

I've got a pretty large thumb knuckle that the frame hits quite solidly when I'm gripping the pistol (note the red circled areas in the pictures). I've tried every combination of backstrap and side panels, but nothing has fully solved it. I'm currently configured with L backstrap, M right side, S left side.

Any suggestions on how I can minimize the pressure point there? After some time at the range, that knuckle starts hurting pretty good (no blisters or anything, just more like bad bruising). It's the only thing I don't like about shooting it.

I was thinking about buying one of the L extended backstraps and see if it would put just enough space in the filled in area to move my thumb knuckle out past the corner.

By contrast, the beaver tail on my Shadow 2 nestles right down in the crook of my thumb and misses the knuckle entirely....it's super comfortable.

Thanks in advance for any help y'all can give...

Surgery?

Either on the gun or you...

That would be the surgery on the gun I'd try first.

But now that you mention it, HK showed a clip-on beavertail for the VP9 SFP9 during the IWA gun show a year or two back.
That might push your hand down enough to reduce contatct of that spot.

Don't find the picture I took immediately, will have to look for that.
Haven't seen that advertised at all, though.

/edit: There seems to be one shop in Germany who sells those, they do "limited runs" of various HK products and seem to have good contact with HK directly, thus offering stuff others can't:

Wow, didnt know they had a beavertail doohicky for the VP9, it kinda completes the two-tone black and tan look.

That clip on beavertail is interesting.....I wonder how close the Lg. extended backstrap compares.

I just purchased a Hogue "Handall" beavertail grip sleeve, so we'll see if that helps too. If not, it was only $14.

Apparently, the thumb knuckle issue has been experienced by a good number of people since the VP9 was introduced. As I've been searching solutions, I found several different forum / Reddit threads talking about. Folks are specifically comparing the P30 and VP9 frames.

Looking at both, if the VP9 had the same rear shape as the P30 it would solve the problem completely. I could possibly do some sanding on that corner to round it off more, but I don't know how thick the grip is in that location.

Maybe see if you can get your hands on the backstrap with the beaver tail that comes with the vp9a1? It changes the shape to be more similar to the P30 and will sit in your hand a little differently. Not sure if it's on the HK web store but their customer service might be able to ship one out to you.

I was thinking the same thing....I've been sitting here fiddling with different positions for my thumb. If I can move it back less than 1/4", and have something that fills in the void in the beavertail area, it's perfect. I'm really hoping the A1F backstrap fixes it for me.

Unfortunately, the condition you describe is likely exacerbated by repetitive usage of your thumb gripping the firearm. Adding any width to the grip will likely make it worse for you as it will likely force your joint outward, only to pull it back in when you close your hand. I would try using the small backstrap and side panels, and perhaps a flat trigger...and see if you have more comfort when you grip the pistol. There is also a possibility to have some custom modifications made to the grip panels by hand stippling.

I know this isn't ideal or a great answer for you...as you may have to adjust your finger placement on the trigger. Some flat triggers are positioned further forward in the trigger guard, so that might be a consideration while selecting a suitable brand for your needs.

I have used these guys in the past, and they do excellent work on HK polymer frames. I will add that HK's polymer formula is fundamentally different from most other manufacturers...and in most cases it is far thinner in places due to its inherent strength. They don't have to work on the frame, they can modify the panels only, however from your photos it would seem that a bit of contouring might assist you with your goal.

I attached a couple of examples below...

Best of luck.
