Not exactly sure what happened but I was at the range today with the wife shooting my vp9.
I think there may have been a FTE, she laid it down I attempted to clear, drop the mag, reinsert and rack the slide THEN wow, couldn't open the slide for nothing! Locked up tight.
I don't think there is a live round in the chamber since I dont see the red indicator.

Any suggestions?

Will do in the am. Not reloads but an off brand ammo I had on the shelf. I will post a pix of that also, Thx

Treat the gun as if it is loaded.

If you have a vice of some kind, drape two towels over the teeth to protect the slide, orient the barrel in a SAFE direction, and tighten the clamps onto the slide in such a way that you can forcefully push the frame forward.

It probably is just an expanded case.

If you aren't comfortable or able to do that, just take it to a competent gunsmith and they will probably fix it in a couple of minutes.

BE CAREFUL!! You very likely have a loaded chamber. Often, an overlength cartridge will do exactly what you describe. . . where the bullet is stuck in the rifling, and the extractor is hooked over the rim of the live cartridge. The extractor is holding the slide from being retracted away from the stuck cartridge.

Two ways to go from here: 1. Point the gun in a safe direction and fire the round that is stuck. . . or 2. Press-in on the rear of the extractor with the slide fully closed to unhook it from the cartridge rim, and retract the slide as you do so. Disassemble gun and remove barrel. . . then you can place a brass rod or wooden stick down the muzzle and tap out the stuck round (do NOT try this with the pistol still assembled and slide closed)

Good advise all. At the range I did attempt to fire as one of the final steps. From my photos it appears there is an empty case lodged in backwards. I can see a hint of brass at ejection port and a fired primer when looking down the barrel.

I knew all of those photos of rounds backwards in HK mags would come around to bite someone one day.
Bullet forward works better :90:

Glad you got it sorted out but also wondering how it got in there backwards. Surely you would have felt an empty case when loading the mag.

Okay, it looks like you are right about the backwards case. If so, the mangled case is likely still being held by the extractor. . . at least to some extent. Try to unhook the extractor as you retract the slide.

I would place my left hand over the top of the slide, and press-in the rear of the extractor, while I hold the grip normally in my right hand. Then I'd press the front edge of the front sight against the underside of the table edge of your wooden bench to press the slide backwards.

Whew! Got it out. Simply pressed on the extractor, locked the slide open, used a small screw driver to pry it out.

Thank you ALL for your valued input!

I've had something similar happen twice in about 500rnds fired and each was a live round that was jammed in the chamber, which fired properly but wouldn't extract. After firing, the brass was effectively crimped in the chamber and required removal of the slide from the frame to expose the bottom of the barrel. Tapping on the feed ramp in the removal direction pulled the case back enough to allow for extraction. Once removed, the brass looked just like every other fired case.

I'm thinking this is a function of oversized brass and the stepped chamber crimping against the bullet in the case and locking it up. Since it's only happened twice, I don't mind it much hit it does kill confidence. Could also be longer brass which is getting crimped at the case mouth, but I don't have enough data points to prove this out.

Now I dont own a vp9 but I do own other HK pistols, but from the pic of the muzzle your guide rod notch is canted quite a bit all mine the notch is vertical this would mean broken guide rod or improper install as well. (Just a curiosity?)
I will chk, Thx!

Here is the spent round. To answer some of the questions;
-I bought the vp9 used a few months ago
-I estimate I put about 300 rounds down range since
-must have been a swollen case or low powdered round not allowing it to eject
-it was not in backwards, lol, when I finanly got the slide open
I will do a thorough cleaning and check the extractor.
No more crap ammo! I will save that for the glock:)
