Ok- I have seen the raging debaters go wild on the MR762 thread below and I do not want to make this a SCAR 17 vs. MR762 thread.

I need some advice for buying my next gun and I may end of buying both of these weapons.

I currently have:
LWRC REPR 18"- using it with 2.5X10 NF scope- 800m longest range shots- but sticking to 600m and in for the most part.
HK MR556 with Trijicon TA-11 and RMR-500m and under
LWRC M6A3 6.8 with Trijicon ACOG for 6.8-500m and under- like the ballistics
LWRC PSD 5.56 8" with Aimpoint Micro, which I love- 300m and under

I use a AAC 762-SDN-6 with all of the above. I don't shoot the PSD suppressed very often because of the short barrel and the potential of baffle strikes etc.

I really like the ballistics of the .308 and want to add a true .308 battle rifle(DMR) to the collection with most likely an Aimpoint Micro... I want to be able engage targets quickly 300m and under, with the much better ballistics of the .308. The REPR does really well for longer distance work. I am sure the MR762 could do as well, but I already have the REPR.

So, for those who have or have shot a SCAR 17s... What are your thoughts as a true battle rifle vs. the MR762?I know the SCAR is quite a bit lighter, which right now is a big factor to me. Thanks in advance for your input.

I have both H & L, very light and scar H has very soft recoil compare to any other. 308 out there.
My vote goes to scar H.

My vote is for the SCAR 17. I say that not just because I own one, but because I think it is a fantastic firearm and it's a very unique addition to the collection to boot. You already have a number of good piston ARs, so why not add something that stands out.

It's system that was designed around the piston rather than one which has been modified to work within a legacy one. This means they went with a large heavy carrier (much the way HK did with the G36) to help control the recoil. It also means that they were able to add a folding stock. It does all this, and it improves on Stoner's ergonomics. On top of that, the thing is darn simple. Simple to disassemble, simple to clean. It's beautiful in its simplicity.

The two biggest concerns about the system are the reciprocating handle and the lack of magazines. I had no problem getting magazines from Midwayusa for $34 each last spring. I had to wait a couple of months, but eventually they filled my order. I understand that demand is still exceeding the supply, so you may have to wait a little while. Put in an order with someone (other than the FNH e-Store who charges your credit card up front) and wait. You will get some if you do. DO NOT pay outrageous prices from Gunbroker or anywhere else.

The reciprocating handle has not been an issue for me as I use a VFG and have never tried to use any sort of grip near the mag well/handle. Frankly, there are a lot of advantages to having a forward handle. It is a simple light design. I can press check the chamber easily. The handle can serve as a forward assist (although I've never had to use it in this capacity).

I've shot a wide variety of ammunition through it from 150 gr Winchester hunting rounds to Wolf steel case, to a lot of German MEN/DAG surplus, plus some 168 gr Hornady A-Max Superperformance, 168 gr Georgia Arms BTHP Match, and finally a little Federal GMM 175 gr. SMK. I have not had a single malfunction. Period.

My best groups were with the GA Arms BTHP stuff which I managed to shoot .77 moa group. The Hornady 168 gr. was a little worse, and the 175 gr. FGMM was a little above 1 moa groups from a rest. The barrel is chrome-lined with a 1:12 twist which I think is a little slow for the 175 gr. I would have preferred a 1:11, but I recognize it's supposed to be a battle rifle, which means they built it with 7.62 NATO M80 ball rounds in mind.

It is a very soft shooter for a .308. In fact, it will spoil you. I go back to .308 bolt-guns and the recoil takes me by surprise. I haven't tried taking the PWS brake off, but I hear that doing so will increase the recoil a bit.

While all firearms development is evolutionary, some are more revolutionary than others. Sure many of the concepts are found of other systems, but the SCAR system has taken many of the best and combined them, and then was throughly tested by the military and passed with flying colors. The SCAR, G36, CZ 805 BREN, and ACR are really the future direction for firearms. Not that I think the US will necessary leave the AR, but politics, money and ingrained beliefs may have more to do with that.

SCAR 17 mags is very hard to get currently if you can live with just one mag, FN said more is coming but who knows. HK seems has better track record for keeping up the mag supply. LMT 308 mags are plentiful and cheap.

I don't own a scar but if it were my money I would go with the HK. I think it will hold it's value better and it will be pretty cool along with your MR556. Just a personal preference. SCAR is a good weapon just don't really care for them.

This and I believe you'll be waiting for sometime for the MR762, given HK's track record.

Have you tried to buy a UMP mag in the last year?

the SCAR 17 is very sweet, buddy of mine owns one. someone mentioned above about the mags but to be honest i think at first the HK will be hard to snag mags too.. they will both kinda suck in this aspect because they both use proprietary mags. If you really hard up on wanting the MR762 then I would wait, if you are still up in the air though I would just get the SCAR 17. I had the opportunity to get a SCAR 16 and I chose to wait until the MR556 came out because I wanted it that badly. My same buddy also has a SCAR 16 and its a good gun. If i find a great deal on one I think I would pick one up but my point is that I have not one regret about waiting and getting my MR556 it was worth the wait because its what i really wanted! I however with the MR762 am not as excited about it as I was the 556. i am about to be in the market for a .308 battle rifle but I have a couple of projects gun that need work/finishing before I commit to that choice. When i do get to that crossroad if the MR762 isnt released and out to mass market (not just 2 or 3 on GB going for 6K) i wont even second guess getting the SCAR 17. Its that little something different that I would love to add to my gun safe.. in FDE of course. but both would look great in 16 inch barrels in my opinion.
