What do I have....Action 3, F or Modified bolt head?

Somebody tell me what I have.

Here's the deal, I would like a few more of the new style profiled bolt faces (action 3 or F type) so they can handle the +P and Hollow point ammo, but I want to keep the standard retainers.

I know the wire retainer is supposed to be stronger and better but I have never had a standard retainer brake. I keep a lot of spare parts and I dont want to have to stock 2 different kinds of retainers. (plus the wire retainers are 10x the cost) I want to use the standard retainer in all my guns - HK-91, HK-11, HK-94, G3k, SP89....etc. so they are interchangable.

See the attached pics of two bolt heads, both have the new face profile, but the top takes a STANDARD RETAINER and the bottom a wire retainer ONLY. You can see the top one has a wider opening. Top is a "JB" date code and the bottom "IO" Not sure if the top one is a modified standard bolt, action 3, F, or some sort of tansition bolt ??? I have two of these - both JB date coded. I would like to find some more.

Can anyone tell me exactly what they are????

Come on guys, nobody knows what kind of bolt this is?

Um.. you don't either! So why you want to give us a hard time for not knowing?!! ha-ha!
The "Action 3" bolt head takes a standard roller retainer while the "F" bolt head takes a wire roller retainer. A few years ago I picked up a couple "Action 3" bolt heads with British proofs. They work just fine. But, be sure to check your bolt gap, i.e. headspace, if you install either one.

The only way you are going to do that is by selling the newer bolt heads and get all older style boltheads for yer 9mm/40/10 guns. The wire retainers and the "F" retainers are not available for the 223 or 308 guns, but the old, run-of-the-mill flat retainers are the same across the board.

But anyhow, gimme a break. The action 3 retainer is the same price as the flat retainer (about $12) while the "F" retainer is only $7 more. You're talking chicken feed here, Bub. What's the cost of the guns in question? A thousand Greenies or so? Ten to fifteen times that if we're talking an NFA item... and you're worried over $7??? And not like they'll FILL your damn spare parts box anyhow.

That'll teach you to pick on us old timers who don't jump at every question that floats our way.

BTW the bottom bolt head is Action 3, the top one may be a SW/CA hybrid ( you Greenies out there like that word, according to Beck)

Ummm, no. It doesn't.

Thanks Shattered Mind.

I just like for all my parts to be interchangable. Just OCD like that.

I know the bottom one is a Action 3, the top one is the one in question. It has the new profiled bolt face but still has the old style retainer. It is not a SW/CA hybrid. As you can see by the last picture I posted it is JB date coded and german poofed.

Is it a transition bolt or maybe a action 3 bolt someone has opened to take a standard retainer. JB date code I think is 1991 so that would make it maybe an action 3 style bolt according to the MP5 history on this site. F didnt show up till 99.

1991: Improvements made to the bolt head and chamber face. Also the contact moment was changed on the ejector in relation to the bolt group

1991: The roller holder is changed from the flat plate to a spring or wire type holder previously seen on the HK23E.

1999: The MP5F is developed and introduced

I have two of these and they are both JB coded.

thanks

Anyone got an idea about the top bolt?
I just wanted to revive this thread. My MKE bolt head looks identical to the pic in the OP. Actions three bold face but old style retaining plate. So if you want the A3 bolt face with old retaining plate, get an MKE bolt head. Mine have been perfect with all types of ammo

I wish someone could post side by side pics of the Action3 and F bolt heads from the side and top. I have seen pics of the front the the A3 vs F but not from the side or top, Thanks!
