Here’s how I do it.
Install the safety axle on the receiver as normal. Once it’s installed completely I.e plunger and sling followed by grip and bolt. Then flip it into safe, put the lever on the axle and add 1 drop of lube into the hole. Using a 1/16” roll pin punch I push into the hole to ensure that everything is lined and lubed up. Then I place my pin in and I start tapping it into place. I do NOT use those starter roll pin punches I just go at it soft, but firm with a heavy hammer and it gets the job done easy.

 

I agree with above, oil is a must.

I was hoping I could get one of the levers on before putting it into the receiver. I oiled the pins as well with no luck. Currently, I'm freezing the pins and will give it another go later.

@Sextus How are you tapping the pins in without a roll pin punch with the selector in the receiver? I'd imagine it's awfully close and you risk striking the receiver pretty easily. Just being real careful?

I’ve done this tons of times. I’ve ruined a pin or two in my time lol, but I’ve never scared my lowers. Knock on wood.

 

It has been several years since I messed with one. I recall putting one of the selectors on the axle, and then putting that into the receiver. I started the roll pin the remaining selector, put it on the axle, and then tapped it in with a punch and hammer. If you are worried about your receiver getting scratched then just cover the respective areas with electrical tape.

 

I removed mine for a single sided Colt reversible safety since Im left handed, hated the safety digging into my finger. What I would love to find is the polymer safety.

 

These pins are tough. My suggestion is to use oil then use a roll pin starter punch to get it started. Switch to a regular punch to finish taking it in all of the way. Do not use a roll pin punch with the ball on the end unless you want to bend or damage the pin.

 

Lol oil oil oil. I used painters tape on the area I don’t want to scratch up. Used the tape to “guide it” as well.

 

I put one lever on before installing the axle. A little bit of oil and I insert the pin a little with needle nose pliers. I then break out the Knipex parallel pliers and press the pin down flush. A tap or two with a punch and it’s good. Insert axle through received and repeat.

 

I used a set of channel locks and squeezed it in.

 

Well, the first side mushroomed to all hell and the selector actually got a nice bit of reshaping 😂 the second side turned out well though. That was definitely an "F it, I've already screwed up this much" kinda moment lol
