back in 2000 I was working part time in a camera shop. the owner of that shop had been collecting camera manuals for decades. He had been scanning them in high def - took him forever.

he finally retired, closed the shop, sold the building and moved to the Carolina's (SC I think) and then sat back and I believe has been selling PDF versions of every camera manual since then. The work has already been done (scanning in the manuals) and now all he has to do is pick which file for a requested manual and boom, off it goes

that might be an excellent business for HK manuals. All the manuals that they have made. Turn them into PDF's and offer them all.

I think he got like $9.99 for his - sent them all over the net to who ever wanted one. His goal was to sell one manual a day. Pretty good living if he ever did it. Could be the same for someone here.

Oh, I do alright with my normal job. I collected the majority of these off the net for free, and scanned a few in my personal library that I couldn't find PDFs for. Not really looking to make money off of this; just offering the service. If bandwidth charges get noticeable, I may have to re-think the operation, maybe put up a paypal donation link or start charging a bit for access. I use AWS for the infrastructure, and have a few other instances out there which I use as a cost for doing my job; so as long as this site doesn't hit the wallet too hard, it will be open access for all, so long as I am able to do it.

 

Shoot me a pm and I'll send you a pdf version of the 2018 HK 'European' catalog.

 

One suggestion if I may. Could you modify the links so that when one clicks on a link, the PDF file will open up on a new tab on the browser. That way one can go back to the original page (with links) if he wants to see another PDF without having to click Back and Forward?

"target=_blank" should handle that.

Its fixed now. Just added a piece of code to identify new stuff and typo'ed the path in that section.

 

A buddy of mine corrected my backwards-thinking on this little project.

I had been hosting it directly on a running Amazon EC2 instance, because I'm a Linux guy at heart, and thats just how I think. Need to host something? Apache.
But it is far cheaper, storage-wise and bandwidth-wise to use Amazon S3.

So I moved things over. Should be faster for you guys, and cheaper for me. Win. Win.

Feel free to recursively download now. But don't worry -- the site isn't going anywhere. If the costs of the site hit a $1/mo I'd be amazed.

I also went ahead and scanned a few more things fresh.

There is more out there than I thought. I'm may have to re-think the page layout. Maybe break things out per-weapon, along with categories.

 

Re-organized things by individual weapons; both the HTML and the file structure.

If you made bookmarks directly to the PDFs you'll need to update them.

It should also render better on iPhones. I hope.
