Hello there, I've got a question that's been bothering me for quite some time now. I've never ever handled and/or shot an HK416, but I've always been interested in the rifle's history and function. And when I saw that there are different barrel lengths available with the 416, I was wondering if, for example, a 416 with the 16.5 inch barrel got the equivalent to a carbine or mid-length gas system or the same than the 11.5'?

I believe there is one op-rod length for all rifles. At least for the first generation rifles that is the case. I don't know if HK made adjustments in the A3/A5 and forward models, as we don't have those here in the States (yet??). the function of the rifle is not dependent on the tube length like in a DI gun, the operation is different. apples to oranges if you will.

Okay, thank you very much for responding. But are you sure the distance from the chamber to the gas port doesn't play any role in the quantity of gas that gets in the piston? Like, if it's closer to the chamber, do you think there will be more gas entering the gas port which would result on a more brutal (and maybe less reliable?) action of the operating rod on the bolt, for longer barrels? I'm not sure about anything. I'm learning from everyone here.
