The Euro version is not covered by H&K USA's warranty. Get a US model. Then leave lots of room in the budget for SBR approval, and accessories like a stock and vert grip, extra mags and, of course, a quality MP5 Armorer and Operator Course.

 

Thank you for the helpful tips, I've always wanted one and now have the $ to purchase. I don't want to jump into the purchase without knowing anything. The SBR approval is must and accessories. I'll have to look for a MP5 class here locally.

I'm looking at one with 2 magazines, a soft case, sight tool and a sling brand new for $2900. Is this what there trading for nowadays?

 

1. KAC Navy can will not work with those 1/2x28 threads
2. Trigger housings are different from 9X series
3. Research stocks well or buy from a reputable dealer if you want legitimate German

I found the B&T telescopic stock would suit me best. Very compact and I like the 5 positions to choose from.

 

1) Only the HK USA imported model covered by HK USA
2) Different shelf than 94, thus different clip and pin dimensions for housings
3) If you SBR it, it is subject to 922r compliance
4) 1/2x28 thread pitch, which is not compatible with the KAC MP5 suppressor (1/2x32 threads)
5) Has a block in the rear of the receiver to prevent dropping in a full auto bolt carrier

 

Get HK genuine magazines. Don't waste your time with the cheaper aftermarket options.
Yes, the HK mags are expensive. But it's a buy-once-cry-once scenario and it's really nice to have at least 4-5 spare mags that you know are all 100% good to go.

ETA- the 1/2x28 threading is honestly an advantage for most of us; we'll rarely if ever see a chance to buy the correct KAC suppressor, might as well have the 'industry standard' thread pitch for suppressors if you opt for a can. But if you do, 3-lug is the way to go anyway

 

Surprised nobody mentioned it yet but the rear sights are not your traditional closed drum sights but open. I tend to shoot high on the sp5k over the sp5, but that can be trained out

 

I believe I just saw a couple of diopter sights in the classifieds.

HK94 was the original 16” semiauto import model. A block shelf replaced the front push pin hole so machinegun trigger groups would not be “drop in” - 90s/9X series guns are inclusive of the other models like HK91, HK93, etc that were imported in the same era with similar modifications for import

If you want to be era/factory correct the K (original MP5K briefcase machine pistol) shipped with the castle rear sight, as the K is a pistol sight radius vs. rifle.
The 94/SP5 (as with my past 93/5.56 91/7.62) are rifles with diopter/drum sights.

 

Almost no one has the gun as a straight pistol. There’s no reason not to swap it out for a diopter.

 

It's great to have a choice/preference, I can agree a 1911 with an external extractor works.

It's pretty much taking out a pin, pulling off the end cap and replace it with whatever you want (and what's legal for you to do so, see SBR regulations).

But some choices make more sense than others.

as the K is a pistol sight radius vs. rifle.

That's less an issue of sight radius (defined as distance between front and rear sight) and more an issue of intended use.

If you use the K length MP5/SP5 in it's less efficient form without a stock or brace at arms length like a pistol, the castle rear drum is the more viable choice.

If you use the K-length MP5/SP5 in its more modern evolution as a "PDW" with a stock or a brace, that brings the rear sight closer to your eye, making the castle rear drum definitely the worse choice and the diopter drum the correct choice while the sight radius stays the same.

Legally (at least in the US) one is defined as a pistol, the other is a short barreled rifle, but even then this definition gets washy once you put a brace on that pistol.
