lead rounds in HK

My indoor range requires lead rounds, no jacketed ammunition. This is the only indoor range convenient to me. The HK manual for my P7M8 and P20000SK say do not use lead rounds. Besides the need for extra cleaning, will this damage the gun?

The lead will eventually fill the lands and grooves of your barrel.
Eventually they could fill enought to lodge a bullet and possibly blow out your barrel.

If there is a rifled replacement barrel (Jarvis and the like) - I would purchase that or find a new range.

+1, I have known people who have experienced this after math.

Jarvis sells them and they are the only source I know about for new barrels. Google Jarvis gun barrels and you will find the link. Jarvis is match grade, uses conventional land and groove, and cast lead bullets shoot like crazy in them. For a range that only allows lead, I would get a Jarvis barrel and never look back.

You can inquire about using plated bullets since it doesn't have a jacket that will come off.

You can shoot lead bullets out of the P7 and other polygonal barrels. Just make sure you use a hard cast bullet, BUT as a warning, some barrels may lead like crazy and some won't. One other option is to use a moly coated lead bullet. Most people that use them don't have any problems with leading in the barrel.

I have a some what similar experience. The steel plate event I shoot doesn't allow any FMJ ammo as it flings large frags, which your range ought to clarify as the issue. There are coated/frangible rounds available that have a very light jacket to it, so light in fact that you can scratch through it easily with a knife. Or in other words a jacket so light that the round will still easily fragment into tiny bits just like lead rather than fling large frags. They are pricy, in my opinion - call me El Cheapo, but they should be allowed at your range or least show them what they are and offer to test them.

Also, JHP's should also be allowed as they do not frag as bad as FMJ's, or at least they are useable where I shoot, which is outdoors.

That said, I shoot the snot out of the Cabela's LRN's (lead round nose). I've put a few through my P2KSK and have not had any issue, maybe I shouldn't but then I did buy an HK and I expect to be able to do so if I darn well please. I mostly use my USP for these events and I've never had an issue with it. Thankfully these LRN’s are decent ammo at a decent price.

Last, there house their rules… Probably better off with a barrel that can shoot lead and won’t worry you.

Good luck with it!
