I see these 2 parts listed at http://www.robertrtg.com/g3.html and they sound similar. Is one part superior over the other? I'd like to get into reloading so I'll need something for my PTR-91. I see the Port Buffer is $50 while the Shell Deflector is $20 so saving $30 would be good.

From the pictures though, it looks like the Shell Deflector would need to be welded on where the Port Buffer doesn't need welding? Any preference between these 2 parts?

I personally like the shell deflector, but yes, it does require welding and then a refinish on the rifle. If you are reloading, you'll also have to sonsider thatt he shell deflector may dent the casing.

Port buffers have a tendency to scratch/gouge the receiver when installing/removing but will save you a required refinish job and will do less damage (if any) to the shell casing.
