PTR with 16" or 18" barrel?

I'm ready to pull the trigger (no pun intended) on a new PTR91. Trying to decide between the "F" model with the 18" barrel or the "K" model with the 16" barrel.

Is there much of a difference in accuracy out to 200 yards? Is there any other benefit of the 18" barrel over the 16" barrel? Which barrel would have less recoil, or with only a 2" difference is this something that won't really make a difference in recoil?

Also, I've seen a number of posts about rifles for sale by CDNN. Can someone without a FFL order from them? I would assume that any firearm purchased would need to be delivered through an FFL dealer. What's a reasonable charge for an FFL license location to charge to handle the transaction?

Thanks

You,ll find that the 16" barrel will recoil slightly LESS than the 18" model. I personally dont think there is any difference in accuracy, especially out to 2 &300 yrds. I have a ptr91kfm-4 that I shoot with irons at 200 and 300 and its alot handier ,being shorter and all. I think there is a hundred to two hundred feet per second more in the 18". But,I doubt your going sniping with your battle rifle or that its going to make any difference. My ptr91k is very accurate and it shot holes thru holes out of the box off the bench. My 18" FMp barrel on my other PTR build seems to be about the same, accuracy wise. Get one if both if you can LOL. And yes ,it most shipp to your local FFL. Good luck; I love my PTR91k with a CTR magpul stock, its just a very handy little piece.

The velocity difference is more like 50-60fps. You only lose about 150fps or so going from 18" to 12.7". I got similar groups from both 18 and 16" bbls. The longer cocking tube of the F makes manipulations easier unless you put on a 21/23 style cocking handle on the shorty...YMMV on that.

Very timely question. I went to the range yesterday with a friend of mine who has an actual HK-91. My PTR "Scout Carbine" w/ the 16" barrel was shooting tighter groups at exactly 200 yards than his w/ the 18" barrel. We both were using fixed 4x glass. He wasn't real happy about it so I suggested he send his trigger pack off to Bill Springfield like I did. "Yeah, that _MUST_ be the problem". ;-)

Comparing the two rifles we both noticed that the welds on my PTR are a little nicer than his HK, but I like the finish better on the HK. The mag box and release are fitted better on his gun.

Ammo wise, we were both shooting Remington UMC and Priv Partizen.

Regarding the 16" vs 18" for a .308 in 1 in 10 twist, if you go to Fulton Armory's website, somewhere buried deep are some links to the mathematics behind the length of the barrel vs the bullet weight and twist rate. One of the Fulton armorers once told me that 18" is pretty much an ideal balance for the .308.
