Rugged Obsidian on MP5K 3 lug

The NFA review channel posted a quick video on their Facebook which shows the Rugged Obsidian 45 mounted on a Dakota Tactical MP5K RS and MP5 via the new Rugged 3 lug adapter.

The adapter is internal so the short configuration of the Obsidians looks nice and compact on the K gun. I just thought you guys may like to see it.

I use a SilencerCo Octane 45, and shoot 9mm through it with a variety of hosts. I contacted SilencerCo about using a 9mm end cap and they recommend against it. They've seen end cap strikes with the smaller diameter cap on a .45 can. You can argue that it shouldn't happen, but at least with direct thread, things come loose sometimes, and occasionally wobble. The minimal benefit didn't seem worth the risk of a buggered can.

Indeed! Thanks for the post. Yeah I have a prototype version, it's done they are just waiting on custom springs for it. They should be releasing it asap! Most of you know I provide photos Rugged and other companies out there so I'll share these here to give you a better look at the 3-lug.

I will say this is the most solid 3 lug mount I've ever used. I don't know if this is a internal vs external thing but there is ZERO wobble. I've had issues with Gemtech and Silencerco (both external) 3-lug wobbling on my 9mm Glock mag SBR's barrel. The Obsidian mount is SOLID. If I had to guess, this has to do with the way the piston inside is machined. It seems the internal type 3-lugs have more surface area surrounding the 3-lug barrel once inside.

I like the 9mm endcap. The Obsidian didn't exhibit any increased port pop and shooting the full length setup on a G17 wet with the 9mm endcap was a religious experience lol. I shoot cans every other day and I was taken aback. That being said.... don't forget to swap the endcap back when moving to a 45 host! DOH!

Thanks for showing up and giving us a first hand account!

While I've got you here I have a quick question that I haven't been able to get an answer to. Will Silencerco fixed barrel spacers work with the Obsidian?

My Obsidian stamp will arrive any day now and I really want to run it on my UMP conversion with a 16X1 LH M threaded barrel. However, I have been told that Rugged will not making a mixed mount in that thread pitch or a fixed barrel spacer of there own. I have been dying to figure this out, thanks!

OK I just personally checked and verified a few things for you guys.

1. The SiCo fixed spacer does work. I mounted it on a gun and pulled on it, there is no rattle or movement. It fit like a glove, and was the same size as the spring it replaced.
2. The SiCo fixed adaptor (replaces the piston & spring) fits like a glove too.
3. The SiCo Harvester 5/8x24 flush fixed mount fits perfectly. This also drops the OAL by a solid 1/4" over option 1 & 2.
3. Griffin Armament 3-lug adaptor does fit. You compress the spring down and push while threading it into the can body. Fit perfect. It did have some rotational movement once on the 3-lug barrel but no up or down wobble. It should be good to go. It felt fine.

All that being said, I don't like hodge podge parts on my guns and cans but it should hold you over till Rugged can catch up on production and you can support them by buying theirs as well. Also I would check with them about warranty issues but Rugged is a pretty kickass company so I don't see them screwing you over because you had a brain fart.

Hope that helps!

Thanks so much man. I've been searching for this answer for 8 months now. I ordered my Obsidian from Silencer Shop the day they were announced on new year's eve so I should have it any day now.

I can't wait to run the Obsidian on my UMP. I may be the first to do so. I have a Rugged Surge on the way too.

Great videos by the way.

@MasterBlaster - thanks for the post. I too am looking for a solution to mount the Obsidian on a 16 X 1 LH HDPS barrel on my UMP conversion. Was hoping this https://ruggedsuppressors.com/product/fixed-mount/ would be available in 16x1 but not so far, so I'm happy to hear that you solved this with a Sico fixed barrel spacer.
Just to be clear, is this the device you got? https://www.store.silencerco.com/products/fixed-barrel-spacer?variant=221756540
So I still need a 16x1 LH piston for the Obsidian (which of course is out of stock) to go with that fixed barrel spacer? https://ruggedsuppressors.com/product/piston/
Thanks!

Been researching for my first suppressor, and this one's at the top of the short list. Anyone used one on a Mark 23? That would be my immediate use, but ultimately I'd like the forthcoming MP5 to share, and I'll probably also end up getting a threaded barrel for my VP9. The MP5 is threaded 1/2x28, but I may have it 3-lugged. The HK webshop has VP9 threaded barrels in 13.5x1 LH. HKparts.net has US made 1/2x28s, but they are more expensive than the HK ones and, well, not HK made. Those who have bought one, what piston (if any) does it come with? One of the videos I saw unboxed one and there was a piston included, but don't know if that was a special review sample.

Although I have an Octane 3 lug coupler for my Omega 9K, I like the Rugged Obsidian's 3 lug coupler much better. Threads in no issues, locks up just fine and cuts another inch or so off overall length vs the Omega 9K + Octane coupler.

Setup seemed hearing safe to me (although I ran it with foam plugs in, like always). No issues so far with several mags, 147gr. Recommended, if you can find one.

Here are some pics:

Just became my new favorite can and mount combo!

Thanks for the pics. I've ordered the three lug coupler, at least a few more months before the 9k comes home.
