Springfield Armory Sar-3 help

My father passed away 4 years ago and left his firearms collection to me, after he passed I sorted through his collection sorting out what I would sell and keep. The majority of that end of it has been dealt with but there are a few oddballs still hanging around. One of these is a Springfield armory Sar-3 that until recently I didn't realize what it was. Originally I had just assumed it was some oddball HK-91 knockoff and cast it aside in the sell pile, so it sat for the last few years. Recently I was going back through things and took another look at it and realized it was missing the entire bolt assembly. So I did some research and realized it's an EBO copy of an HK 91 made in greece on HK tooling imported by springfield armory. Now my question is what do I do about replacing the bolt assembly? I also have an MP5 and HK 93, so I'm fairly familiar with HK's from shooting both of those but I've never done anything with guns from the G3/HK 91 rifles. I went through everything HK that I have and was able to find a bolt carrier for the but nothing else. Due to my unfamiliarity with the springfield clones of the HK 91 I have a few questions. Are G3 and HK 91 parts directly interchangeable? I know cetme parts aren't , am I better off just buying a complete bolt and bolt carrier assembly or trying to piece one together by adding parts to the bolt carrier I already have? and where are the best places to look for parts?

I owned several of the SAR series along with original HK's. The SAR's in my estimation are equal to the HK in all aspects in terms of overall quality. The parts are 100% interchangeable and are made on German machinery. If I had that rifle I'd first try to locate an original EBO bolt head/carrier which in and of itself can be difficult. However you can locate much easier an HK bolt/carrier that should drop right in sans checking bolt gap of course. Cheaper route, use an FMP bolt head from HK parts, HK lock piece, and a PTR unmarked carrier. Since it is a SAR 3 and not an 8 overstamp gun- it is a pre-ban and not subject to 922r regulations. A couple of pictures would go a long way to assess what all parts might be needed. Early guns came in with black furniture. The SAR 3/8 guns generally had black thumbhole stock furniture but people would replace that with readily available surplus green German stock sets often times leaving the original black cocking handles instead. The reason this rifle is desirable because it is Pre Ban and because it has the threaded muzzle that only the early SAR 8 overstamp guns had or the pre ban ones that came in prior.

Wouldn't matter if it were. The gun has been in country longer than 5 years, 922r compliance is moot. The statute of limitations for 922r prosecution on this has long expired. For all intensive purposes, this is now a domestic firearm, not foreign.

HK parts has a tungsten filled EBO carrier listed for around $200. Don't worry about semi/full. Just put a carrier group together. I'd look for newer parts if possible just so you know how many rounds it'll have on it.

EBO carrier
HK G3 Full Auto Bolt Carrier

FMP bolt head
HK G3 Bolt Head

HK locking piece
HK 91 Locking Piece

firing pin and spring should be listed as "also's" on the last one.

You can also keep an eye on gunbroker for complete groups, but watch for condition.
