I am in need for a new carry gun and I have narrowed my choices to these two guns. I will add that I have a USP Tact .45 and also a Sig 226R 9mm in the safe so I appreciate the quality of each manufacturer. The Sig 229 seems like a good carry piece and now that I have held the 9 compact USP I am leaning back towards the HK. This will be a daily carry/OWB holster setup and I currently carry an M&P 9c which is a great size carry gun but not in the same category as the above.

If someone on the forum has experience with the USP 9 or the 229 9mm I would appreciate any advice given. Good availability of accessories, holsters etc. would also be a factor to consider in my decision process. The USP Tact .45 is a great gun but limited accessories in my experience. Thanks

While in my local gun store I was able to hold both side by side and the HK certainly has a more narrow grip and has a good feel to it. I know that in the end there really is no wrong choice because it is like trying to decide between a BMW or a Mercedes. Thanks for the insight.

I'd never buy a P229. I used to lust after it until I fired one at a range next to a P226 and USP in compact and fullsize.

The grip of the P229 is awkward to say the least. It's short like a compact, but has the circumference like a desert eagle. It's insane.

The P226, while still fat, at least was proportionate. With no option of a safety and crazy ergonomics, I'd write Sig off entirely if it weren't for those triggers!

I'd have to agree with Sobriquet in regards to the peculiar grip of the 229. I recently had a chance to handle one, and it felt unusually wide and not particularly long. In fact, the grip length was felt akin to my P2000SK. Odd indeed. It was built like a tank though. It all comes down to what feels better to YOU.

Still, this is an HK forum so i'd be inclined to recommend the USP regardless :D

The 226R is my first Sig and the trigger is what has me hooked as well. I also agree that the grip on the 229 is not much smaller if any than the 226. I am curious as to how the USP compact 9 would be on the range. I understand that quite a few LEO and government agencies have been using the 229 as the duty weapon of choice. I am not sold on either one as of yet but I am leaning towards another HK.

The requirements that I have are simple 1. good concealability 2. reliable 3. when I pull the trigger it goes Bang.

You're on an HK forum, so you're going to get a biased opinion. But I'll tell you what I said to a guy over on another forum looking for his first handgun.

You can buy anything you want. If it's a gun that seriously might get used to defend the life of you or your family, then you get yourself either an HK or a Sig. With the recent QC problems at Sig, I think HK's the way to go. I also wasn't comfortable at the time with a firearm without an external safety. I've gotten over that somewhat as my comfort level increased having a loaded firearm in the house.

If you want a 9mm for concealed carry, you need to ask first whether you want that external safety. If you already have a Sig, and are comfortable not having one, my personal opinion is it's better to have one type of system across your guns. If you're used to sweeping off the safety, get something that can be kept Condition 1. If you're not, I'd say safeties aren't for you.

I'd either get a USPc to carry locked & cocked or a P2000 with LEM. I'm not a fan of DA trigger pulls.

The type of License that I possess for the current job duties that I perform dictate that I conceal carry a 9 mm. You bring up valid points regarding the type of safety and proficiency with a particular type of handgun. As I was typing my intial post I knew going in that asking someone on an HK forum to compare against another company I would get a more slanted view. I can appreciate that and once again will state that this is not my first rodeo nor is it my first Handgun or HK. I take all advice and insight well and do not get offended easily when someone voices an opinion. My Sig experience started this year with the Blackwater 226r which is a fine weapon with zero issues so far. I will add that on that brands forum people complain about current QC issues that I have yet to experience.

My most recent range time and qualifications for the State were performed with the Sig and going to the de-cock mode into a DA was a new experience that although different was not uncomfortable. This process was required by the Range Master/Instructor each time the slide was racked with a round in the pipe. Once again I appreciate not only your wisdom but also the wisdom of others on this forum.

Just to throw this out there... if you're used to the weight of a 226 and prefer metal framed guns... there's always the P7M8. It'd conceal better than any other HK save the P2000sk.

You can flip the mag release on a Sig.

Or better yet forget the HK and Sig and buy a Glock 19 ;).

Based on weight, size, capacity, and reliability, the G19 is probly the best CCW.

If you really want an HK, get the P2K instead of the USPc or P229.

9/10 times I'll take a Sig over a HK, except when it's going to be on your hip for hours a day. In that role, imparticular the P2K, HK is the way to go.

Since you're into Sig's, if you want something a little more compact, you should look into the P228 as well.

I own a USPC 9mm and love it. You will not be dissapointed if you choose HK. It's strange, but my hands fit the USPC perfectly but I hated the Sig. To me they feel too different to be candidates for the same thing... guess it's just me. By the way, I don't know where you are exactly but if you are near Port Orange try Florida Gun Exchange, they have many HK's and Sigs to fondle. They are professional and helpfull, give them a try.

I have owned both the USPc and the P229. I liked the USPc for the ability to carry condition 1 (cocked and locked). You also do not have to worry as much about rust due to the polymer HK frame. The Sig doesn't feel like a 2x4 and has the best trigger and is the easiest to shoot fast but it also feels slightly heavier than the USPc. Parts and accessories should also be easier to find for the Sig. If I had to choose between the USPc or P229 I would take a non-rail P229. Also take a look at the P2000. The slim grip (also the most comfortable of the 3 guns) of the P2000 would make it easier to carry then both the P229 and USPc and offers ambi controls. I was also able to shoot the P2000 better than both my USPc and P229.

Or better yet forget the HK and Sig and buy a Glock 19 ;).
