Usp variant 7 to variant 1; worth it?, or dump the gun?

just picked up a usp 45 variant 7, with 3 mags and night sights for less than$500. Normally I'd be ecstatic, but that dao is killing me. Is it worth the money to have it converted, or should I dump the gun and get what I want from The get go?

The gun is a 1995 and in good shape, pd trade in. I'm just thinking by the time I put the money in to it, I could've bought something newer and get exactly what I want.

What would be the avg cost to ship to hk to do the work and make upgrades to newer parts?

Dump it off on me for $300 since it is so old... I'm hosting an old timers club for the USP series... j/k but serious too :3000000:
It is probably easier to sell it off and then get what you really want. LEM is an idea.

It does have the heavy LEM installed. But it just seems foreign to me. Not sure if I'll grow to love it after I get some trigger time. But I have a lead on a smoking deal on a HK 45 in var 1, and am not sure I want to miss out on it.

I could get the light trigger spring........

I think the PD must have changed it out, since it was a trade in and in service. The paperwork from the Gun Store reflects LEM, but when I asked they didn't seem to know about LEM vs DAO.

When I rack the slide the hammer stays pre-cocked and then there is no resistance on the travel of the trigger, then about 9lb to break. When i manually cycle, the trigge stays pre-cocked and then there is similar pressure to break.

Thank you TooSixy! I really want to like this gun, I'll get those springs in and run her like a mule. How is the installation, fairly easy? I do a ton of work on my AKs, FALs, and ARs, including trigger jobs. But have never worked on a handgun trigger before.

Since I know the LEM was fairly recent. What parts would they have updated to install the LEM?

Swapping the springs is pretty easy, though something like this TRS Tool would make your job a walk in the park. You will need to replace 3 springs: TRS, HS, and FPBS.

If it started out as a DAO, they would have had to install a LEM sear, replace the DAO hammer with a LEM hammer, add the Cocking Piece + Spring and the new-style, longer catch to support the LEM hammer. I am not certain if they also upgraded the Firing Pin as part of their conversion, but you can remove the Firing Pin Block and check (or post a pic of it and we can tell you).

All right, the parts came in yesterday and went into my USP last night.

Hammer Spring - Went in easy, no way to screw that one up.

Firing Pin Block Spring - Kind of a pain in the ass, I have the old firing pin, and wasn't at first aware the orientation of the firing pin had to line up with the Firing Pin Block and then the roll pin. I had the spring fly out a few times while I was trying to get the roll pin in to secure the situation, which added an additional 5 minutes or so of searching on my hands and knees. Eventually I found success and moved on.

Trigger Reset Spring - So I bought the tool for this, as I didn't want to disadvantage myself beyond what my inexperience would already do. Took me a few minutes to get the orientation. Then a little longer to figure out I had to put enough pressure on the legs to get them both bent to get the pin through. Now when this spring flew out it really flew out. It was a good 10 minutes of crawling around to find this one, as it shot clear across the room. By some miracle, I did find it. Eventually I got it in, and completed the job.

Since I have now successfully done it, I can confidently say it would probably only take me 10% of the time to do it again if I ever needed. I really like think the new springs added a new life to this old girl, and the reset is a real positive feel (nice). Looking forward to out to the range.

Toosixy, thanks for the help on this one!

One more question. Would I benefit from changing out any other springs? Or upgrading the firing pin? Nothing seemed loose or without life, but just wondering.

You should be fine with those springs.

The firing pin upgrade was to prevent breakage from excessive dry firing without snap caps. You can if you want and I would recommend it as it being used and a PD trade in. You will have to upgrade all 3 parts (FP, FPB, and FPBS) and they can be ordered from HKCS for much less than anywhere else.

Makes sense. Better to be safe then sorry. I ordered the new firing pin, firing pin block, a new firing pin spring (keeping it all new), and a few roll pins. I really beat the hell out of it getting it back in and I read to replace them every time you remove one. Got a few roll pins to stockpile with the rest of my misc. parts.

Firing pin block spring I just upgraded as part of the light LEM trigger spring upgrades.

Thanks again!

Gotcha,

Upon further review I do have the new Firing Pin block installed, was that necessary for the LEM that was done? Looks like I have a back-up on the way. My firing pin is definitely old though. So I'm looking forward to trading that out. Mags are old (marked LEO only, back from the ban in 1995, as they're 12 rounders), but they seem like they have some life to them. All the same, I think I'll order new ones on my next bulk order.

Regarding the money thing, I have consistently found that collecting firearms is exponentially more expensive than a crack habit. It gets worse as you delve into different brands/platforms too. Currently I am an AK Fanatic (SLR 101S-Arsenal, 7.62x39 VEPR, 308 VEPR, M77 Yugo), AR (Bushmaster), FAL (Imbel/L1A1 Frankenfal), M44 Mosin, FNX 45, CZ 75B, Glock 19, and now HK guy reborn (Reborn due to the fact I had a roller-locked Century 93 I sold off to fund my M77). Dear lord!

Hey TooSixy, definitely none taken. You have already established yourself as the expert, and I know what I don't know.. I went on HKparts.net and looked at the detailed pics of both FPB. The old seems to have the spring wrap around the base. While the new has a hollowed recess the spring fits in. The one on my USP had the hollowed out one. I would pull it out and take a pic, but the roller pin took quite a beating last night getting it back in. I don't want to pull it out again until I have some back-ups.

The one I had out last night, was this style
