Looking to swap out the stock sights on my USP9 and I was curious what everybody is using, was hoping to see some pictures of what you are currently running. Leaning towards a fiber optic front with blacked out rear but curious what my options are.. I believe the Novak fiber optic sights are discontinued?

For nights I’ve become an XS convert from trijicon and meps. Once HK switched to them from Meps for OEM on the guns I bought, I had the chance to try them and was sold.

I think they are brighter, I like the different brightness from the rears vs the front. For day time shooting, they are excellent too.

Oh…they are usually cheaper, too.

I disagree. Night sights only glow enough to be useful when in a pitch black or very dimly-lit environment where there is virtually no light anywhere either in front or above/behind you. Walk into your yard at night time with no lights around, and sure, they'll glow and make you feel super "tacticool" as you slowly raise your gun up at that tree trunk in the middle of your yard to see the 3 green dots lining up. However, the vast majority of us are not nighttime operators stalking unsuspecting targets in the dark and taking them out while they're on watch duty and taking a pee or cigarette break. It's also risky to rely on lining up 3 glowing dots in a very dark environment without enough light available to see the silhouette of your entire slide because it's possible to misalign the dots and put the front dot to the left or right of the rear dots.

In the real world, you have to identify your target with a light or at the very least the area were your target is standing needs to be lit up enough with ambient light to still ID the target. This is true even if you happen to be shooting out of a dark room where your sights might be glowing as you look out into the lighted area. However, in that scenario, you don't really need the dots anymore as you now have the silhouette of your gun and sights to work with.

@waz0wski hit the nail on the head. With a WML, you simply don't need them.

They are an outdated concept and only limit your accuracy and speed in more realistic situations like day-time active shooter scenarios at schools, at the mall, at work, etc. Basically anywhere in public during the day. They also take the fun out of day-time range work as you are usually dealing with an overly wide front sight post and 2 rear dots competing for your focus (hint: you should be focused on that front sight). If you have to shoot at night, it's probably going to be in your home during a home invasion situation. In that case, again, you should have a WML bright enough to illuminate the entire room and ID your target and should be relying on the silhouette of your entire gun and not 3 dimly lit dots.

I prefer a plain black rear with fiber-optic front for most situations that I might find myself in. IMHO, they offer the best combination of speed, accuracy, and overall shooting enjoyment. I happen to run the same SightMeister CFO sights as mentioned above by user @Grant435 on my USP .45. They are a newer offering to the market, but a really fantastic design! Highly recommend them if you're looking for a plain black rear w/ fiber-optic front.

Cheers!

I've tried out the factory Meprolights, XS BigDot, and now I runthe original Trijicon HD Night Sights w/ orange dot on all my non-optic pistols now.

Since I've added WMLs to all my guns the night sight isn't really necessary, but the big orange dot is quick to pickup and shoot, I can work them like a red dot optic for fast minute-of-man shots

These hands down -

I've tried them all including Novaks (still have the taller Novak CT sights on my CT) but these are just better all around and have a better sight picture. The front post is .115" so a bit thinner than the Novaks (doesn't cover up my target as much) and the front sight fiber optic is better protected from damage and accidental breakage compared to the Dawsons front due to how it's shrouded. The dot is recessed so it has a very crisp and bright dot. The proportions are just really great and they aren't overly tall since they are the same height as the stock sights. A bonus is they offer one-handed charging against a belt or table because of the front "ledge" type design. They were easy to install too. Rear sight went right on and was tight but not too tight. Front sight was maybe a bit snug but nothing a few swipes with a file couldn't fix. If they made these for my other guns I'd buy 'em! A bit pricey but worth every penny IMO. Far better than any 3-dot night sight, which are kind of old-school these days and always distract my eyes away from the front dot because the rear dots always appear too big. They seem to be a new company with some production volume issues/delays but it's hard to blame them during these crazy times where we cant even get toilet paper and new cars. :)

old thread, but i've been looking for some sights for my USP and stumbled on this company. They look really well made, but reviews for them are nowhere to be found. Appreciate the insight, I think I will give them a go.

@CajunK - you make some valid points. Perhaps I shouldn't have used the word "outdated." I just feel the poor sight picture they offer makes them less than ideal for most real-world scenarios the majority of us civilians are likely to encounter. It's also hard to get people to move away from whatever has been "standard issue" for law enforcement for so long, so I get that as well. People get set in their ways and don't like change or being open-minded to new concepts. Probably the same reason I can't get myself to join the RDS craze. On that note, I don't know that I'll ever go that route. Too many things to go wrong. Yes, the high-precision accuracy can be addictive at the range when you have all the time in the world to find that red dot and line things up before squeezing off the shot, but I'm not convinced it will be as intuitive in a high-stress, life or death situation. I guess I just don't want to take the chance because I've never been in a situation like that, and training can never fully simulate the stress and adrenaline that would overcome the body and mind. I don't want to find out the hard way that RDS aren't for me. YMMV, of course.

Yep, like people sprinting back to the 9mm bandwagon. 😜 That said, for over 25 years, night sights have been on every issued and personal weapon I've carried.

I was just having this conversation with a colleague. I've tried it and have come to the conclusion that the time, effort and ammo it would take for me to revamp a career of training isn't a priority for me at this point. Maybe if my eyes get bad enough and the technology becomes more robust. Paul Howe sums that POV up nicely:

The CSAT Way - Paul gives his view on pistol red dot sights.

On my current three H&Ks I have the factory sights
20+ years ago I installed Meprolight Night Sights on my USP357C & P7M8
Yeah I'm Old school now & my 56th Birthday is Today
I want Night Sights because I go out every night & every morning before the sun comes up
Because of that my Glock 19X goes with me
I want to have night sights on these three HKs
Watching this thread

Still wanting a SIG P365 Just because of the Night Sights
Sorry to not be 100% Laser Focused on Hk
Bought this P2000sk to be my new smaller carry weapon

Also, forgot to mention. Not sure if this is true for every USP but, my HK factory sights were set up from the factory as - align the center of the front sight to the intended target. The Trijicon HD’s are set up to align on the top of front sight not the center of the front sight. This was the case with both my USP’s, Expert and Compact.

I’m running Dawson Precision green fiber optic front and OEM blacked out rear. The front is their .110" width sight. Dawson Precision HK USP Fiber Optic Front Sights Everyone's eyes pick up different colors so I settled for the green but I think several colors come with the sight. Since the rear sight notch is not real wide, I went with s thin one that fits the notch for "combat" shooting, so there's daylight between the notch and front sight. I believe HK uses PDA rear sights on the Expert mine are black serrated like a target 1911,,,,great combination and I'm very satisfied with the Dawson, I have them on many pistols and revolvers I shoot for competition.
