CETME - build or buy?

I have the opportunity to get a build from for about double the cost of what a friend will sell me a Century Sporter C-308 (Rail on top, I think it’s the PTR one).

I have a parts kit and a flat. Is it worth the extra cost? The build could be even more due to the parts being out of spec.

Did Century/PTR do any special heat treat to the receiver or anything else I might miss with the builder?

I have a PTR-91 already but I really would like an old wood and steel battle rifle.

What do you guys think?

Edit: Don’t need it to be historically correct and all that, just a nice old ish looking rifle. I saw that MARS thread and I know I’ll never get close to that.

So I ended up getting the C308 from my friend. Sold it to me for $700 cash. Adjusted for inflation, that’s less than what they cost on 2015.

It’s one of the railed ones which look like they have a PTR made receiver and barrel.

I ended up passing on the builder because he’s a SOT and there were rumors on this forum and elsewhere about some monkey business involving turning a client build into a post sample, and I don’t want to be in his pile of paperwork. Damn shame, his builds looked amazing.

Going to measure the bolt gap, gauge the throat and maybe replace the firing pin and I’ve already installed the wood handguard and the stock from my parts kit.

Congrats! You'll like the Cetme.

I've got a PTR91 and a C308 as well.

Completely redid the C308, and it functions well and is accurate enough -

Made a few changes to the PTR91 -

Both are a blast to shoot. The same pattern, but completely different.

Thank you, I’ll have a look at that thread!

During the pandemic I bought an 80% flat and a CETME-C parts kit from Apex or Sarco, can’t remember off the top of my head.

I read that there were full auto pieces in the kit so I sent it to Bill Springfield for a Pin and Weld and trigger job.

I ended up buying a PTR-91 for hog hunting some time after and got the Spuhr stock and replaced the slim handguard with the AIM Sports cheapie. It looks terrible and I’ll replace it with either a GI handguard or one of those Circle 10 wide handguards. Really easy to hit targets out to 300 yards with Russian ammo.

Anyhow I found that I couldn’t get the grip and trigger group to work with my PTR so I decided to get someone to build it and when weighing the costs, I decided to check on what C308s were going for and a friend of mine just so happened to be selling one for not a lot of money.

Bolt gap looks to be in spec, haven’t tried the go/nogo gauge but I did replace the handguard and stock now.

Here it is below.
It currently has a Swampfox Trihawk, which is what I used on the PTR before but it seems to be too high for a good cheek weld and the eye relief is ridiculous. I also randomly have a steel CETME mag that was usable with my PTR but never fit.

The point is to have a cheap shooter for some pest control, and now I’ll have some spare parts!

Oh, one bonus is that I have a long time dear friend and mentor who is Spanish. He has fond memories of the “Chopo” he used while doing his military service in the 1980s. Next time he visits, I’ll bring him out on a hunt and I’ll let him use this one. I’m sure it will make him smile.
