Dear forum members, I'm a hunter and weapon collector from Poland and I've finally made a decision to buy my first own HK rifle. However, I have quite a big dilemma. I planned to purchase a HKMR 308 with a 16.5 barrel, but a gun with such a barrel is currently unavailable in Europe due to the fact that HK handles government orders first and the only available option is a rifle with a 13-inch barrel.
I'd like to use the rifle primarily for hunting in the woods and in the open, and sometimes in the mountains, at a distance of up to 600 m maximum. And here's where my question to you, the dear forum users, arises. Is it better to wait around 18 months for a weapon with a 16-inch barrel?
Please be so kind as to help me resolve all my doubts in this topic.
Kind regards
Martin.

Welcome to the site--- get what is available, or you may not get at all!!!
You may or may not need to shorten your maximum range, depending on the ammunition used--- maybe members with the 12" Assaulter barrel upper, or cut down 16" barrel, can comment.

Witam!
I am unfamiliar with the game animals in Poland, but would assume Roe/Red deer and wild boar would be the "toughest"? Either barrel length would easily get the job done...the question is probably more of breadth of capability and enjoyment on your end?
The difference in barrel length would equate to perhaps mostly just a bullet velocity difference... others who have run both lengths can perhaps speak to this more precisely. Staying in the sight picture for a follow up shot or tracking may also be a consideration.

Are you able to or have the desire to run a suppressor? Ammunition choice or hand loading your own would allow you to fine tune terminal performance.
For me, I would not want to run the concussion of a 13" 308, so if I could not run a suppressor I would wait for the 16"...but 18 months might span a couple hunting seasons too, so yes, get the first available!:2300000:

Yes, of course I'm planning to use a silencer, the law has changed in this regard in Poland and it is allowed to hunt with a silencer, but only for wild boars. I also think that the possibilities of using a silencer will be expanded soon.
I wonder if the silencer will efficiently level the differences between a barrel length of 13 and 16 inches? I mean in terms of increasing the efficient weapon range.
I'd also like to ask for suggestions which particular silencer I should choose (type, model).

Well, for the last couple years I have used a G3K - SBR (12.5" bbl) and an AR10 w / 14" bbl almost exclusively for hunting (hogs, deer and misc vermin). Both have done really well. Like AGG mentioned, finding the right gun / ammo combo is big factor for success. I have hits out to 600 yds with 168 gr. Wind is a bigger factor bc of the slower projectile. It really comes down to your confidence you find in the system when it is incorporated with your knowledge / skill set. Good luck. Let us know - T
